Just got done watching the British series Detectorists on Netflix. I’d heard good things about it, so I gave it a whirl.
It’s about two sad sacks, best buddies, who are into metal detecting. The two seasons follow them as they search for treasure, talk loads of bollocks, show their thorough knowledge of ringpulls, and perhaps, maybe, perhaps, mature a little.
It took me a couple episodes to really get into it, but after that I fell in a big way for its droll humor and quirky characters. (I think it was the moment when the club president, having just given a long talk on buttons, sums up by saying although they’re usually nondescript and featureless, he likes to think of them as little bits of history; I started giggling at the thought of an hours’ worth of slides of featureless buttons…) My wife was similarly dubious at first, but ended up liking it a lot. Rocketeer says two thumbs up!
Yep, it’s just a beautiful thing. There are a few big fans on here.
Mackenzie Crook is a gentle soul and no one knew if he would continue writing. Thankfully, he seems to think there’s a bit more life left because S3 was announced last week.
I love it. The bit with the google watermark was brilliant comic timing. To play something so daft so straight needs skill.
I was almost in series 2. They were filming near here and I was following a car on a trailer being filmed. Unfortunately I must have ended up on the cutting room floor. My left knee is still visible in Bridget Jones Diary though!
Bump! I checked this show out due to another thread recommending it.
I can’t say how much I enjoyed it. I tried to slow down and not gobble all three series (and the Christmas special) up, but it was hard, and I finished it off last night. With 30 minute episodes, one after another seemed so natural…
I really, really enjoyed it, and am so thankful it was mentioned here. Loved the scenery as well, the fields and trees, and the insect/flower openings. Oh, the title music! I am going to check out Johnny Flynn’s albums. And I liked the 3rd season’s “music video”.
You can also catch Johnny Flynn co-starring in the Netflix series “Lovesick.” I won’t mention the original name of the show, it was so bad. It’s a nice little sitcom about a guy who finds out he has chlamydia and has to contact all his former lovers so they can get checked out.
Thanks for bumping this for the third season! I binged all of it today. Such a kind show with genuine warmth. The scene in the finale with Terry looking across at his wife after he found a button just slayed me. Such joy and maybe sadness at the same time. The quiver of Gerard Horan’s lip is so perfect. And then his look around the field? Beautiful.
I just started watching it on Netflix today. I’m up to episode 3 so far. Beyond the characters and the low-key humor I love the scenes of the green and pleasant land. Gawd how I’d love to meander through those landscapes!
