Due to frequent mis-use in the world in general, I didn’t take your use of the word ‘literally’ literally. But that does in fact seem to be the case:
Deus Ex: Human Revolution Boss Battles Were Outsourced
In other news, I recently ran up against the Mantis battle again, which turned out to be much harder if you don’t have the EMP protection.
heh. Sorry for confusing you. I try to choose my words accurately. I found the fact that any company would farm out such a key aspect of design to a third party so insane that I used the word “literalkly” to mean, “I am dead seriously not making this up.”
I mean, I’ve never, not once, ever heard of anybody doing something so reckless. Of course, DX:HR was supposed to have two more fully-explorable zones: Montreal and another city that was not named. And I expect that Hengxa was supposed to have additional quests for the second visit.
Yeah, given that I was frequently reminded during loading that “City hubs have multiple quests that can be unlocked…” somehow that made me think there would be more than three hubs.
That is indeed bizarre - I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a game that was not done entirely by one studio before (unless that studio tanked and another one had to take up the mantle, that is).
It’s relatively common for components of the engine (i.e. physics, basic battle system, etc) to be outsourced, as well as pre-rendered cutscenes. But I’ve never really hears of the level design being outsourced (except perhaps for minigame based games).
I had a very easy time with all of the boss fights, except for the last one (seriously, what the fuck was that about?).
Wait for them to charge, hit the Typhoon. The moment it’s done eat some food to recharge and hit the Typhoon again. After about the third or fourth the boss is dead and you haven’t moved from your spot.
One thing I liked were the little details on the computers. The Nigerian scam, a guy named Dwayne yelling at Jim to give him back his stapler, stuff like that. I also got yelled at by Prichard for going into the women’s bathroom.
I started this game the other day and was stuck on the first boss fight, but then I found this thread – thanks for all the advice, y’all!
Can someone explain in very small words how to go about hacking? I don’t understand when to use the nuke/slow viruses and when it’s okay not to. I’ve watched both of the hacking tutorials in-game, and I still don’t get it.
Also, this is embarrassing, but how do you throw objects? (I’m on an XBox 360). Hitting X again just drops the object at my feet.
I’m far from a hacking expert, but I’ve probably only had 2 fails in about 40 hacks, so I must be doing something right. Generally, I don’t use a “special effect” (like Nuke) unless the node I’m trying to hack is at the same level as my hacking skill. IOW, if my hacking skill is 4, and I’m trying to hack a level 4 node, and I have a generous supply of countermeasures, I might use a Nuke.
There have been a few times where I’ve used the Slow where I thought I wouldn’t be able to complete the full hack before the timer ran out (I think the hotbutton for XBox is right bumper).
To throw, press right trigger (like shooting a gun) while holding the object. Don’t feel bad; I had the same problem initially.
I feel like i’m missing something here. I keep reading about how there’s “three city hubs” that can be explored and have side quests available. During my playthrough, I went to Detroit, then Shanghai, then Detroit again, then a stopover at a dungeon in Montreal, then back to Shanghai, then a dungeon in Singapore, then the endgame.
Is there a third hub that I missed somewhere? I’ve read Montreal was supposed to have more content that got cut - is that what the reference is to?
Either that, or they count the two districts of Heng Sha as separate hubs.
Maybe. Montreal was originally supposed to be one.
Unfortunately, most people don’t take it if they’re going stealth. And the last one is actually the easiest. You can beat it without stepping from cover, basically.
Okay, confession time. I can’t beat the first boss.
I have 1 level of dermal armor, and his bullets do so much damage that I die within seconds. I can hit him in the face with a shotgun blast 3-4 times (unmodded – used the mods on my 10mm pistol, which is useless against him) but die before I can get any more licks in. How many hits does he take to go down anyway?
See the pillars on the right side of the room? Kite him. Hide behind a pillar, wait for him to get close, if you can, stun him (stun gun or EMP grenade), pop a few shots at him and then sprint to the pillar on the other side.
Remember, don’t take risks, and don’t get next to him. If you have to wait to regenerate, you can outlast him if you give yourself time to heal.
If you have grenades, use them - an EMP or a concussion grenade will stun him for a few seconds, which will give you time to get some headshots in. Beyond that, watch for his grenades, stay on the move, and hit him with everything you have. Go for headshots exclusively - anything else is a waste of ammo. A few dozen headshots from a 10mm pistol should do it. If you have Typhoon, USE IT.
Barret is probably the hardest of the three bosses, since the other two have weaknesses that can be exploited pretty easily. This one’s more just an issue of staying alive long enough to grind down his HP.
If you have Typhoon rockets run up next to him, hit it, and the moment the cinematic is done pause the game and eat a recharge bar then unpause and hit it again. I did that repeatedly for every boss but the last one and they were never any issue.
Here’s a helpful vid. That particular tactic doesn’t rely on any aug for obvious reasons. That being said, yeah, Typhoon or EMP spamming eats all of the bosses (though if you EMP spam you want the dermal aug to protect yourself from your own EMPs).
Thank you! I’ll try this tonight. I was having a lot of fun with the game up to that point…
Namir is kicking my ass.
I hate, hate, HATE these boss battles but have not had issues really up to this one.
I went strong stealth and got hit by the EMP/disable event at the beginning of the fight.
I have tried various strategies from online sources, including bringing a turret up, have not messed with actually trying to battle with him, because I hate that it forces me to do that.
Any tips or advice, or am I basically screwed unless I go load up on heavy weapons and melt his face?
Such an awesome game except for these parts.
I have only the standard “vanilla” game with no pre-order weapons or flim-flam to work with.
Brought me to a dead stop, after spending an hour or so trying to defeat him.
He just shoots me once or twice and frags me with emp granades, the turret doesn’t seem to do much, as he is cloaked all the time.
Run around the perimeter of the room, turning and facing inside the center each time. Namir isn’t SLOW, but his climbing animation sure is. So what you can do is get some pot shots off on him, if you have some, EMP grenade him while he’s climbing over the divider in the room to kill his stealth and stun him a tad. As soon as he starts shooting, throws grenades, or hits you once or twice bolt to the other side of the room. When I killed him, I only needed one reasonably stocked (I’d say ~200 bullets or so), unmodded Machine Pistol, but when I failed sometimes I needed to resort to a pistol and/or the combat rifle that was laying around, so it heavily depends on your aim what weapons you need to kill him.
Not that this isn’t completely reliable, and sometimes he won’t climb, but run, this isn’t a problem if you’re quick enough to grenade him.
It takes a little bit to get this strategy to work, however, sometimes I found myself having to skip an opening because his pattern got off, and if you’re not quick enough (say you’re hiding from him to regenerate health), he’ll tend to jump outside the middle cube and try to get you. It’s not too much of a bother to restore him to his former pattern, but if you mess it up too badly, you’re dead.
