Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

The sequel to the very good Deus Ex: Human Revolution is due out in less than two weeks and wanted to see who else was going to pick it up?

I’ve been replaying Human Revolution to get ready. I hadn’t played it since it came out and have really been enjoying the experience, which is nice considering how many times I have played through the original game.

It looks like the developers went with one of the endings from HR, and set it. The question is which ending? It has to be either the Sarif ending or the Illuminati ending.
Trailer.

Neat live action trailer.

The endings to Human Revolution were extremely vague by design, and by definition didn’t change anything significant, as Deus Ex (1) was the canon future. Every single ending in DE:HR was designed to point towards that.

Off to the Game Room

That live action trailer is amazing.

Gonna watch it once Kin junior hits the hay.

I wonder if I should move my No Man’s Sky money towards this.

I think no man’s sky is more likely to hit the bargain bin sooner.

Liked the trailer. Could of been from a cool HBO sci-fi series (which should be a thing, common HBO, get in on that sci-fi!).

They do have a Westworld series coming up that I am looking forward to.

Just 5 days until release. Launch trailer.

A very cool look at art inspiring reality.

The early gameplay I’ve seen seemed to focus more on combat than anything. For a teaser that makes sense, but I hope they stay true to their roots and keep in mind how much better the boss fight in the DLC was received than the main quest in HR.

For reasons that boil down to my own psychology, I don’t see myself just buying the game on Steam. I feel like for the same price I’m entitled to a disc that probably like my Fallout 4 disc contains only token files that really just point me to registering and downloading the game from Steam. Seems like I ought to just buy it from Steam. Somehow in my head, despite the fact that the actual physical medium is a bauble that will be put away almost immediately and that it doesn’t make the possessor the owner of a game, only one-time-use slip of paper that comes inside the same box does, for some reason, I don’t want to just buy it off of Steam.

I would have to go back through the old thread to see which ending I preferred from the previous game, but I recall that many of us were irritated by all of them. Probably myself included.

I am excited although I can wait until there’s a sale. I still have a backlog of games. For both games whoever is behind the trailers does a really good job.

Irritating? I don’t remember anyone hating the endings, just the boss battles mainly.

In Deus Ex 2, it was shown that all 3 endings happened to some extent, so I expect something similar here. The endings were basically:

  1. Broadcast Darrow’s actions to the world at his request, revealing multiple conspiracies.

  2. Edit the video at Sarif’s request, to blame hippie terrorists Humanity Front.

  3. Edit the video to blame augmentation technology.

  4. Blow up Panacea, and presumably Adam. Obviously he survives.

The flavor of each ending also changes based on how bloodthirsty you were.

According to a writer, they are continuing the tradition from the first two games (well not the gameplay of 2!).

The game was $24 on GMG yesterday for a brief period of time.

I picked it up for $44 though since I missed the sale.

Review embargo is over too. Gonna start reading now.

I already have bought the game so unless there is a major fumble, like Adam has a brother named Jar Jar, I think I know what to expect. The mechanics of the game should allow for replayability, like the earlier Deus Ex games.

Seems like the gameplay is solid, but the story isn’t very good/interesting, and the end is apparently half baked.

Good overall scores though, over 8 in metacritic.

I am not too worried about the ending. I assume the game is setting up for another sequel, because everything is a trilogy.

Jim Sterling said something about that. Seems he heard it from some source or another - that they plan this is a trilogy.

Looks like I need to make a little space, so I’m finally going to go through the Tresspasser DLC for Inquisition so I can uninstall the game with peace of mind. No hurry, mind you. I mean, the only reason to get the new Deus Ex right from release is that I enjoy being involved in the Straight Dope discussions of games in real time. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of time to get through it before Andromeda hits.

The game is available for pre-loading on Steam. IIRC, there was supposed to be early access for pre-orders but I think that got scrapped at some point.

Been awhile since I played the first Deus Ex prequel, but sounds similar to that game. Bit of a shame, but prequels always make for some difficult story constraints.

EDIT: Upon reading some reviews, seems like a big flaw is that the game is rather short (20-25 hours) and that the first areas are the largest and the end parts are pretty short. Which goes beyond a lame story, that’s just bad game design.
