Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Well, it looks like Amazon only offers a digital download edition. The only pre-order bonus they offer worth anything is an extra mission. Hah! An extra mission. For an extra $5 tax. And no disc to tempt me with its useless tangibility.

Looking forward to this one.

I hope at some point they make a game revisiting the characters from the original Deus Ex. I don’t see a way to do another JC Denton game, but I think you could build a game based on what his brother Paul Denton was doing just prior to DX 1. Theres a whole back story to explore with Jock and Hong Kong/Maggie Chow/Tracer Tong.

I went ahead and pre-ordered through Amazon. They let me pre-download 20 gigs, though the game is reported to need 45 gigs of space. So I may still be in for release-day headaches.

The IGN review says glowing things about everything about the game except the story, which is shallower than the previous games. And they project 20-30 hours of gameplay. But apparently exploring the world in minute detail and having multiple solutions to problems is there in full force. I myself generally take way longer than game reviewers do to finish a game, especially if there’s a lot of exploring to do.

And it looks like the base game on Steam has a bunch of DLC they hardly bothered to advertise. And the extra mission. It looks like they didn’t include any free starter gear good for a no-kill run except for a free cyber mod point.

The miracle of compression algorithms. Pretty sure the download is 20 gigs total, but the uncompressed files will be the 45.

This one has me excited for tomorrow. Might even have to skip horseshoes to dive into it.

D’oh. Of course.

Blue’s News has some news about the Season Pass. I was struck by the mention of the Chipsets for Breach mode. I didn’t think much of the add-on before but now it’s starting to look like it’s their attempt to add pay-to-win functionality to the franchise.

I don’t know how it will work here, but the last game had DLC-related exclusive items. I’m not sure how Breach works but in the main game it wasn’t great in the main game because you often have limited inventory space and the items were a bit to lug around. Hell, the first game let you choose a mega rocket launcher right after the beginning, but ammo was scarce, it was big, and utility was limited so it wasn’t the best choice for most play styles.

I haven’t played any Deus Ex games and it is currently downloading on the PS4. What can I expect?

P.S. I like Tetris and Minesweeper, is it anything like that

Deus Ex is known for two things above all else. First, they have fantastic and huge level design that allows you to accomplish goals in multiple ways. Second. the stories involve government conspiracies, secret societies, the Illuminati, etc.

Deus Ex 1 is pretty dated now, and the second game is crap, but Human Revolution was pretty good. Check it out too if you enjoy this one.

The first game is dated but it is still worth playing.

There’s a mod that revises the look considerably: Deus Ex: Revision. You can apparently only take advantage of it if you have the game on Steam. Aside from new textures, it appears to feature old scenes re-staged with different scene dressing.

Hey, I have a great idea! Instead of rolling out the release over the whole day of the 23rd, lets force everyone to try and download everything at the same time. It is sure to overtax the severs and make people wait even longer.

:smack::smack::smack:

I unchecked all the DLC crap to load the game faster and get playing. Well, I can hit the play button but the game crashes before the first logo screen is done. So I am now trying to download everything to see if that helps…

Yeah, when the game unlocked, I still had apparently an hour and a half of downloading to do. I’ve been playing, but the app where you are supposed to scan in your triangle codes for extra goodies won’t let me log in.

In the meantime, I’m replaying the first mission because I am just now re-remembering how to do this shit. If I want the Ghost achievement, I need to never even agro anybody, and near as I can tell there’s no way to detect whether you’ve screwed it up already. When do they count as alerted? There is a sound made that indicates some level of alertness, but I’m not sure whether a lower level of alertness counts against me. And anyway, that sound is kind of subtle. Lots of games keep statistics of what you’ve done that you can peruse at your leisure. This one doesn’t. I probably had this same problem with the last game, but I got that achievement.

I also have this issue where if I quick save in cling-to-wall-mode, then hitting the space to acknowledge feeds into the game when it starts up again, often firing me out of cover.

Never mind. It seems that you only need to manage to not be seen for one mission to get Ghost. I’m a lot less nervous now.

Yeah I got ghost on the tutorial mission. Wasn’t sure if I could use the tranquilizer rifle, but that worked too.

It’s a bit overwhelming at first. Lots of abilities and menus and keys to memorize. I’m playing with he Steam controller and it feels good, but I’m going to switch to mouse an keyboard and see how that goes. I’ve heard complaining about mouse acceleration.

It’s very early, but so far, I’m really into it! Feels good to sneak around and avoid guards. I think I’m going to try to ghost as much as possible. Won’t upgrade my lethal abilities.

Tip for performance:

  1. Make sure tripple buffering is turned on and you are running exclusive full screen mode.
  2. This ia deferred rendering engine and the MSAA anti-aliasing does not appear to be optimized for it (not that optimization would change things too drastically anyway). MSAA in a deferred engine is VERY hard on performance. Turn off unless you are running SLI. Stick to the temporal AA solution. Downsampling from say +50% Resolution would give you better return on investment in IQ vs MSAA in this engine.
  3. Contact hardening shadows are a big performance hog, and they appear to be bugged at the moment, cause distant shadows to disappear. Turn off.
  4. Turn AF (Texture Filtering) to 16X. no real penalty in performance and as usual, a huge bump in IQ.

I’m running it on all ultra settings (minus contact hardening shadows and MSAA) at 60 FPS (some minor drops to 55) @ 1440p.

I need a new video card. My GTX 780 is getting a little long in the tooth.

So, is the game glitchy as hell for anyone else? My PC meets and/or exceeds the recommended requirements, and while it looks gorgeous so far, I’ve found the intro level unplayable due to invisible walls, objects floating in midair, and other indications that major parts of the game world aren’t rendering properly. I have performed the Rite of Updating My Drivers and these glitches yet persist.

No, that’s weird. Did you try verifying game cache on Steam? Sometimes a bad download or corrupted file after decryption might cause issues like this.

Did you also appease the Machine Spirit by chanting the Litany of Percussive Maintenance and performing its sacred gestures ?
