Deutschmarks to Euros. When?

On my last trip to Germany I brought back 460 DM’s which I wasn’t able to convert back to USD because Thomas Cook had already closed for the day, and I haven’t had occasion to return to Hartsfield Airport since then.

I was planning to just take the DM’s with me on my next trip over (September) and just use them then, but then I got to thinking about the Euro and that they might be converting all the way over. Does anyone know if this is the case and when it may be?

Thanks

Quasi

Check out this link.

I’ve also been concerned. I’ve (stupidly) been holding about 200 DM for over 5 years now. (I was planning to visit again.)

On a related topic…

Does anybody know how to change DM to $ in the U.S.? I take it that your typical neighborhood bank doesn’t want anything to do with foreign currency. My money is mostly bills, with about 30 DM in change.

I guess I could read the OP more thoroughly. I take it that you can exchange money at international airports?

In any case, alternatives would be apppreciated. I’d just about give up on the money if I had to go to Logan (Boston).

…for the link. Looks like I’m safe till September. As for your question: You are right, my local bank doesn’t trade foreign currency, and from all appearnaces those banks which do require one to have an account with them. Hopefully another Doper can do more than just commiserate with you.

Try your local American Express office.

I know Fleet in Boston has a few branches around the area that will do exchanges. One in Wenham, for sure, and I’d assume a few others.

The exchange place at Logan is in the Int’l terminal (E?) on the main floor, just as you walk in from the curb, if you’re interested. They don’t give very good rates, IIRC.

I’m pretty sure the Fleet branch in Harvard Square does currency exchange too.

(Note: most places of which I’m aware will only exchange bills, not coins.)

There’s always these sharklike Cambio offices in the major cities. Or don’t they have those in the US?

Most major banks will do exchange even if you don’t have an account with them - at least they do over here. However, most banks outside of Germany probably won’t take your coins: they’ll change anything starting from a DEM 10 bill or so.

Any Eurozone currency can be used within the European Monetary Union until December 31, 2001. And I’m pretty sure you can change them into Euros (at least in the EMU) for a few months after that.
