Oh you own the home but lease the land from a park. Ok so that’s different than owning the land and parking a double wide on it. That’s nice of you to let your cousin find his way thru the process but man sounds like you need an experienced agent in this area.
I hate this day, The Silver High Holy Day Of Islamaphobia, Recreational Grief, and Perpetual Victimhood.
I’m guessing you won’t be starting a memorial thread.
Sometimes I think it’s The Jack Batty Show and I’m being filmed for someone else’s demented entertainment.
I’m Doordashing for spare cash for things like paying for my Lexipro prescription, which had run dry by three week until yesterday. Two days ago I had a pick up at a restaurant that kept telling me “it’s just be a minute” while I waited for a full fifteen minutes before I bailed on the order. For some reason that sent me over the edge. Again, dealing with a lot of shit right now with my father dying in June. That night I had a complete emotional breakdown. The next day I got my meds straightened out.
Today I went out again and you’ll never guess which restaurant I had an order from. I could have denied it, but it was a good paying order otherwise. I think the lady might have recognized me from the last time because she was rude as hell to me. She said, “it’ll be out in a minute.”
Not wanting a repeat scene, I said, “Is that a minute or is that fifteen minutes?”
“They’re finishing it up now.”
I only had to wait for five minutes but then that’s where Cosmic Allen Funt decided the show wasn’t over. The delivery was to the hospital to where my father died … to the ICU desk on the floor on which he died. I couldn’t do it. I left the order with some kind ladies who worked there on the first floor and called it good.
Chee-rist … what a nightmare.
I was stunned to realize that 9/11 happened 5 years before my adult daughter was even born, and it’s as much of an old historical event she can’t relate to as the Vietnam War is to me.
Wrong thread.
Well, the Great Ordeal has begun. I had a real estate agent visit today who was highly recommended, and knows the area very well. Based on comparables, she came up with an estimated selling price in a range that varied within more than a hundred thousand difference depending on how well the place was prepped and staged. If I follow her recommendations, in addition to de-clutter and cleaning (the latter which she offers as a complimentary service), at the very least the whole downstairs will have to be repainted, which involves major moving around of furniture and of course cost. But I agree with that. I do think it would be a huge improvement.
I think she’s very competent and honest and I have great confidence in her, but aside from the painting I’m going to push back a little on some of the beautification recommendations. There has to be a sweet spot where investment in renovation brings in maximum return, and then diminishes.
All I know is that from this point forward my life will be hell.
Suppose that, in the best possible circumstances, the place sells quickly for full or above asking price, with a closing date three months from now. Great! Unless I get my ass firmly in gear, it would mean that three months from now I’ll be literally homeless!
You’d be the complete polar opposite of “house poor”.
Decent rentals are hard to find around here. After I sold my last house, I thought about renting but ended up buying the current one because buying a goddam house was counterintuitively way easier than renting one!
And after the purchase was completed, there was about a one-month discrepancy between the closing date of my old house and the closing date of the new one, mainly because my buyer wanted the earliest possible closing date.
The result of which was that I had a bunch of money in the bank but no place to live. All my stuff was in storage. I could not use the bank vault as a residence, or use wads of cash to keep me warm.
Fortunately it was summer so I ended up camping for about ten days, and then staying in a hotel the rest of the time. It was a pretty miserable experience even if I wasn’t literally out on the street. I mean, it was a nice hotel, but I longed for a home!
We bought our house 14 years ago. It was a pretty good time to buy, because house prices and interest rates were relatively low and would just go up afterward.
The price I’m paying right now per month for a mortgage for our 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bathroom home, is lower than the bottom range of the rent for a 2 bedroom apartment in our town. If we got rid of the house and decided to downsize to a smaller place where we’d be paying rent (not putting equity in a house, just paying a landlord to live there), we’d be paying more unless we downgraded all the way to a one bedroom or studio.
It’s crazy how that works sometimes. We are in a really great situation. The only downside is that it’s so good we’re kind of stuck. There’s basically no place anywhere at least in the general area where we could move to and be in as good a situation as we are now. Anything would be a downgrade. It’s a good thing the neighborhood is nice and is in a very convenient location.
There absolutely is. You’ve already identified repainting (usually in that dreadful greige range of colors) as usually being worth it. Minor kitchen remodeling (replacing countertops, painting or replacing cabinets) and updating the bathroom similarly is next. Other than that, unless something is clearly damaged or dingy, it’s not worth it.
We’re looking at probably selling in 2030 and I’m already looking around to what we can do, because as you know it’s a shitload of work to prepare.
I can relate. In the manufactured home, which we owned outright, we only had to pay lot rent. I wanted to move but I knew it would be painful when we did. This summer we decided to rip off the bandaid. Our new monthly mortgage alone is over twice what we paid for lot rent. That’s not factoring in the HOA fee.
We can afford it, but I actually have no clear sense of our actual monthly budget right now and what that’s going to feel like because I’m paying for two places to live at the same time. Hence why we want to get this old one sold.
I feel for the people with 2% interest rates who now want to move into something else. That’s gonna hurt. The interest rate on our condo is 6.8.%
I love it though. Pretty much everything about it.
Fuck I just remembered I have to go to a family baby shower tomorrow.
Spouse Weasel says I can’t call in sick.
Unexpected social obligations are the worst.
A pleasant follow-up.
We three were at the track again today, and each of the guys bought me a beer as a “thank you” for all my driving last week. Not sure how much it cost me in gas, but I’m always happy to accept a free beer or two. I only had two, so I had no bar tab when I left.
Thought I’d share the rather nice ending to my above minirant.
At least the guys were decent enough to do something for you, instead of acting all entitled.
It’s after 2220 here (DH has just about every timepiece on 24-hour time, so I’m used to that), and I’m awaiting maintenance to handle a surprise wet area of carpet in a room we basically use for storage. There is no odor to the liquid, so I’ve ruled out a feline indiscretion. There have been no beverages in there for much longer than it would take for a spill to dry, and no rain. The ceiling above it does not show any visible leakage symptoms. The concrete pad (we’re on the ground floor) was just replaced a few years ago after a plumbing issue. Dammit!
I am a photographer; for the first time in 9(?) years i did not go to NYC/NJ to shoot Tribute in Light last night because I, wisely, decided I couldn’t handle a third very late night this week. Though it doesn’t always happen, the next time I finish the night shooting sunrise won’t be the first time gives you an idea of how late a night it can be. - If you have the opportunity to go see it some year I’d highly recommend it. Just like watching fireworks on TV pales to seeing them live, it is incredibly moving to see Tribute & those lights extending to Heaven
It ultimately stems from not getting home on Monday night / Tuesday morning until a little after 3am because others did things poorly, including poor use of technology instead of intuition & knowledge; once we took over, we found the victim in 2-3 minutes in the area where they should have been.
I hate shopping. For anything. Sometimes I get lucky and end up with perfectly appropriate products. Other times I wonder how I managed to fumble so spectacularly.
I finally got rid if my living room couch and replaced it with a daybed after years of thinking it was a good idea.
Well in the last 30 years since I purchased this kind of furniture it appears that mattress manufacturing has changed quite a bit.
Despite going to a dedicated furniture store and mulling over said purchase with what I thought was responsible deliberation I was genuinely surprised at the depth and height of this thing when it arrived.
I have to climb onto it.
I feel like I’m in an observation tower instead of sleeping accommodations.
I did not realize how high and thick it would be. ![]()
My old sheets did not work out well with this 14 inch mutant.
So now I’ve had to spend more time shopping for “deep pocket sheets” and a step stool.
The coffee table beside the bed is so far down that I am considering purchasing some risers to bring it up a few inches.
It’s a work in progress and not at all what I envisioned.
My LXW (Lovely eX-Wife) and my new real estate agent have apparently just teamed up and both of them are coming together to assault me on Monday to get the place ready for sale.
In one sense, I resent this intrusion on my privacy. In another sense, I really needed this kick in the ass a long time ago.
How to deal with this dilemma? For the moment, I’m just gonna have a Caesar, heavy on the vodka.
Not really specific to September, but man I really (really really) hate eye gnats.
For those not acquainted with the tiny buggers, they like to swarm around right in front of your face when you’re hiking. They might land on your eyes or nose but they don’t bite…they’re like little buzzing bouncing black dots hanging in your field of vision as you’re walking down the trail. Annoying as hell.
I don’t know of a way to prevent them, but a bug net will at least keep them from landing. It’s either that or wear your arm out doing the “Aussie salute” as you make your way down the trail.
Postscript: after another attempted raid on my fig crop, I baited a Havahart trap with tuna and a couple of previously harvested figs, and caught the beast, who was released at a far corner of the property, ambling off peacefully into the brush. So (s)he got a nice snack out of it.
