Diablo 3 Open Beta weekend

I’m downloading now. Is battleTag the same thing as my SC2 username and friend code?

Yep.

To be 100% clear, it’s the same idea, but isn’t the exact same thing.

OK, so at what stage in the process do I find out what mine is, then, so I can share it with you’uns?

Okay, I tried again on a whim and got in.

I like it. I can’t say I’m madly in love, but it seems like fun. I played a Witch Doctor, which is apparently an “I Win” button in the earlier levels. Zombie dogs, grasping hands, never-ending dart supply. Woo!

I’ve got to go shopping now, so I’ve logged out so some other poor sod can have a go  I’m tossing up whether I’ll get it, given we get raped for game prices around these parts, but it’s a good chance I probably will.

Hahahhahahaa, there’s a couple hours gone, already  Gonna be one of those weekends.

I’m setting up a wizard and barbarian so I’m ready for any party needs

Someone invited me into a party, sorry I wasn’t sure who sent the invite, and for some reason the accept and cancel buttons didn’t show?? Bug?

Holy cow - my download speed is 60kbps.
I know that’s not a problem on my end; at this rate I’ll be logging in at 2:00 am

I can’t find a way to join someone else’s game. What am I doing wrong?

Well, sonofawhore. I should read things more carefully. I started downloading the client this morning, worked all day, worked extra tonight, put my daughter to bed, and sat down to play–only to realize that I’d downloaded World of Warcraft instead. The link on the open beta page to “download the client” takes you to the general client download page, the first link of which is WoW, not DIII. Now I gotta download the whole thing before I play tonight. Goddammit!

Ok, finally got on. I’ve beaten all that there is with a wizard, which only took an hour or so. Wish I could try her higher level skills but so far she’s pretty fun. I’ll try the witch doctor on my next run.

OK, looks like I’m Chronos#1770

Sucks that there isn’t much to do though. We were able to skip most areas and take on the cathedral from level 2 at like level’s 3 and 4.

I couldn’t even log in; if there’s a grade being given out for the stress test,I reckon it’s a D- or F.

ETA: Usual disclaimer about that yes I know it’s free and etc. Just that I think busy servers and disconnects are a taste of things to come.

After initally getting the error 37 unable to connect this morning, I’ve been consistently able to log in every time I’ve tried for the last 5 and a half hours. Didn’t have a single disconnect at all. I didn’t try to play multiplayer, so I don’t know what the latency is like but I won’t be playing MP much anyway, unless my friend also gets it. But I’m in Aus, so trying to use the US servers I would expect to have a ton of problems.

Overall I’m very happy with it and would give it a solid A if I were being asked.

I see what people meant by how easy it is. I never played much Hardcore in D2 - only once in a while for a change - but if the real game stays this easy, it might just have to be HC exclusively, for me. It also seems that things might not be so heavily item-dependant as D2, which would make HC even more viable, but I guess that all remains to be seen.

So there is never any manual stats (str, dex, etc.) assignment, or what? That, combined with the limited skill selections, and it sure seems like a setup for not a whole lot of variation.

I’m reserving judgement, but I’m still not sold on this, yet.

I feel like MMOs have killed this genre, since they do the same thing with ten-times the scope.

No to manual stats. As for the skills, it’s different and takes some getting used to, but it’s interesting. Let’s face it, most characters in Diablo would use 1 or 2 skills at most, with the occasional Teleport/Barb yell/Necro curse thrown in. This one gives you 6 skills to use at any time. It definitely lacks that sense of accomplishment though… no “oh I got another level, I get to upgrade my Frozen Orb now.” Once you’ve unlocked the skills you want, you’re done.

The no manual stats thing is a bad move, IMO. It just doesn’t feel line a complete RPG/DnD type game without being able to fine tune your character’s strengths and weaknesses based on your preferences.

Also, for items it’s just normal, magic, and rare? No uniques and sets? If not, again, big mistake. Yes, the sets and uniques weren’t well balanced in D2, but then they should have just made balanced ones for D3, not just take 'em out completely.

Other than the much better graphics, there are some other neat little improvements here and there, but I think they made some poor decisions. I can’t help but feel they threw out the D2 baby with the dirty D2 bathwater. With all the imperfections D2 had, there’s a reason that the game had such a long shelf-life.

Yes, there’s always room for tweaks, fixes, updates, and expansions, but it seems to me the whole foundation is flawed. Though, I hope I’m wrong and I’ll learn to love it. Time will tell.

In Diablo II for every character all you’d ever do is put just barely put enough points in STR and DEX to wear your gear, then pump all you points into VIT. Sure, you had the choice, but it wasn’t a very interesting one and to do anything else would only make your character weaker. I’m fine with auto stats.

There’s going to be unique and set items in D3, you can see some of them listed on their website. Unique items are called legendary items now.
