Koreans swear it was Admiral Yi. I’ve seen all those “Let’s KT” ads that glorify the man, and been to the Daejeon Science Museum, which all would seem to indicate that it was him. But other history sites say that it was Nobunaga that deserves recognition for this achievement. Who here knows?
Thank you.
According to Greenwood history of Japan, it was Yi. IIRC, Nobunaga was the one invading Korea.
Historical Facts and Faulty Myth About Kobukson (Turtle ships)
Attempted reconstruction of a Kobukson
(Actual plans of the Kobuson do not exist and there is speculation that the “iron” referred to the spikes used to repel boarders while the “plating” may have been of wooden block construction.)
I have never encountered any other information on Nobunaga’s Ôatakebune, although the Wikipedia entry seems to indicate that they were floating batteries, not ships. (Nobunaga was not involved with the assault on Korea, a plan that was attempted by his successor, Hideyoshi.)
