Did any D.C., MD or VA dopers "zig-zag" when going from your car into a store?

Did you do this or see others do this in public to evade the sniper. Just curious.

In The Shadow Of The Sniper

I heard about this on news reports, but I sure didn’t do it. I have to confess that I felt a little nervous about standing still outside for a long time, like at a bus stop.

And whether you did or not, how many of you thought of ** “Serpentine, Sheldon! Serpentine!”**

I would zig-zag a little walking home from the corner pub, but it wasn’t any concerted effort to dodge bullets.

I never zigzagged and I never saw anyone else do it either.

I saw pictures of people wearing bullet proof vests, and crouching while tanking up their cars…was that common, or was the press just focusing on the odd person who decided to do that?

I live in Glen Burnie, Md. about 40 minutes or so from Rockville so I felt like I was some what out of the danger area. I did however see a gas station that had a huge tarp installed to hide behind when pumping gas. I didn’t do anything differently. I felt the odds were so slim of being shot, why worry. I’m more concerned about whether I have enough milk in the fridge for my morning cheerios. I refuse to live in fear.

Not only didn’t I do it, I fueled my car around 9pm and stood outside the car, providing a perfect target.

Not at all common – I didn’t see anyone like that. However, one day when I was filling my tank I kinda walked back and forth a bit instead of sitting there. I think I may have had it worse than some others, as I live within a half-mile of the first two shootings during the spree and I take the same route to work that they took down Connecticut Ave that morning. (I was about 10 - 15 minutes behind them.) Creepy.

I looked around real hard for white vans and box trucks (ha!) and walked briskly into and out of the store. I gassed up at a station in a crowded area with no clear long range shot. I didn’t see any zigzaggers, but I definitely saw people looking around pensively.

What was more profound was the way people were acting after the snipers got caught. People were out and about, smiling, strolling casually, saying hi to each other, etc. That lasted for a couple of days…

I was in the area of the shooting at the Home Depot during the shooting and was interviewed about the general scene on TV. I didn’t zigzag around but I became more aware of my surroundings and would put objects between me and the general traffic.
