This was a 3-part BBC documentary I just finished watching, and it was something special. They took the usual documentary formula and flipped it around. Instead of a bunch of Westerners heading out into the jungle to learn about a primitive tribe’s culture, they took five men from Tanna, a small island in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu, gave them video cameras, and sent them to the UK for a month. As an added twist, these men are part of the Prince Philip Cult, in that they believe that Prince Philip is the son of God who will return to their island one day.
They live with three tribes in England - the Middle Class, the Working Class, and the Upper Class. Each was hilarious and eye-opening in its own way, but the show managed to include the funny fish-out-of-water stuff and really make some serious points. You get to know these men as actual people, not just cultural stereotypes, and see the world through their eyes.
It was a neat experience, and I recommend it to anyone.
