Did Anyone Have a Nice Valentine's Day?

Mr. SCL had to work, so I had his card on his keyboard when he got up this morning. He brought mine (and chocolates  ) home when he got off after a 12 hour shift that turned into 14 because his relief was late.

No roses. I don’t like roses unless they are growing in my yard. He sent me roses when he forgot my birthday about 5 years ago, and I told him I would much rather have the money, or daisies (my favorite flower) than scentless die within a day roses.

Yep.

My wife is still very much into the Japanese version of the holiday, where women only get gifts for men (the men reciprocate on March 14), so pretty much anything I do gets points. I had a bouquet of roses delivered during the day and then gave her an autographed copy of her favorite author’s latest book as a gift when I got home. She was happy.

We had a lovely day. We just enjoy each other’s company, and neither of us care very much about gifts and such. We decided to simply spend the day taking a nice, long (looong) drive to Flaming Geyser, chit-chatting, visiting old roads neither of us had been on in a long while, talking about our future, laughing about our past. It rained, but we went out and stood by Green River for a while anyway, huddled together and just feeling happy. We watched a couple of old fellas fly their RC planes over the fields for a bit, then came home and watched a movie together.

We decided that today would also be the day we celebrated our third-year anniversary, since we both got today off, and neither of us get the 19th off, which is the Big Day. We were going to go out and eat at a nice restaurant tonight, but I vetoed it, not really feeling like it, and he wasn’t in the mood for driving around looking for an uncrowded romantic spot on Valentine’s Day, so we hopped over to the Safeway and bought salad and ice cream. He’s in the tub now, and when he gets out, I think we’ll just watch some old Simpsons DVDs.

I feel deeply content… just like every other day of our marriage.

My wonderful husband loves surprising me. When I woke up this morning, I was along  A few minutes later I heard the kitchen door open, very softly. I called out, “Is that my Honey?” I heard, “Shhhhh, stay asleep for a few more minutes.”

So, I obediently stayed in bed. A short few minutes later he came into the bedroom, took my hand and covered my eyes, leading me into the dining room. On the table was a dozen roses, in a vase, a wonderful card about being so lucky to have a best friend as his lover, with rose petals and Dove™ chocolate hearts scattered over the table. I prefer milk chocolate, but these were dark. I guess I hesitated, because he then explained, that even though he knew I prefered light, he got dark chocolate because he heard they have health benefits, and he wanted me at his side forever.
That brought tears to my eyes.
Then we went out to breakfast.

Yes, it’s been a great day.

First I had do Jury Duty deliberations and render a verdict.

Then I went out to lunch with my husband.

Then I did some long-overdue research coding for three hours.

We were going to go out to eat, but I’ve been so sleep deprived and exhausted with Jury Duty and my STATS 350 exam tomorrow that I’ve come down with a bad cold. I wasn’t feeling well enough so we canceled tonight’s reservations. I lay my head on a pillow in his lap and fell asleep watching Simpsons. Then I slept for longer while he played Final Fantasy. Then I woke up and we watched more Simpsons.

Now I’m spending a couple hours on the Dope.

All in all, a lovely Valentine’s Day. It’s our first as a married couple.

Woah. You’re not by any chance me, are you?

Although I don’t have a current love interest, today was a good Valentine’s Day. There are only two women at work–they both gave us guys candy. And in turn, we gave them a card signed by rest of the gang. Everyone was quite pleased. My best friend and I sent each other gifts–she sent me a box of candy, a shirt and a baseball cap, and I sent her a giftbasket with a heart-shaped candle and a couple of CD’s. Thumbs up.

Whew, nope. But for a minute, there, I was worried.

You wouldn’t want to be me right now, anyway, I’ve been sleep deprived and seem to have come down with a bad co…

I’ll be back in a sec.

I have midterms. Celebrations must wait for the weekend, when I can do a BDay, VDay and end of midterms celebration all rolled into one. So I haven’t had a nice one yet, but the prospects are looking pretty good!

My day was great because I was able to make it to see my best friends get married. My initial flight out of Pittsburgh into Newark was cancelled yesterday and I switched around to several earlier flights that all ended up grounded. This morning, I got onto a plane into LaGuardia but that ended up being delayed for two hours. When I finally landed I had 50 minutes to get to the Empire State Building. I walked in 5 minutes before the scheduled start time and the Maid of honor handed me my tuxedo at the door. After numerous delays and cancellations and switched flights I still cannot believe that I made it.

We went out over the weekend somewhere fancy schmancy, so we were going to stay in tonight. Jellychick came home early from work, though, and thought it might be nice to have a drink at the beach and watch the sunset, so we did that and she gave me a gift certificate to afternoon tea, which I love. Then we came home and I gave her the bottle of her favorite wine I got her and dark chocolate salt caramels (Yum!!). We made a fire and some tapas and watched the L Word and ate some chocolate covered strawberries that my mom left on our doorstep this morning (Aww!!) It was totally perfect and I’m not sorry to say it  .

I adore her every day, though, not just on silly holidays.

Another single, here, but I had a good Feb 14. There was a meeting of the historical society I belong to, so I got to greet, kiss and hug a lot of people I think are wonderful. And got kisses and hugs in return, of course! T’was a good day.

I am a stuffed animal maven (take that, nongoog!), so this morning, I gathered all the Valentine’s-themed animals together to present Mr. Rilch’s card, cigar and candy to him as a committee. Then I made him a huge breakfast, after which he gave me my V-Day present – a stuffed animal.

See, about two years ago, I got a jones for a bear wearing desert camo. I could only find one, and he was prohibitively expensive, so I got one in ordinary green camo instead. I named him in honor of Adam Crumpler, a Lance Corporal Marine from West Virginia who was killed during Operation Spear. Now Adam has been joined by Kyle W. Codner, another Lance Corporal from Nebraska. And yes, he has desert camo.

Beyond that, we had pizza and Triple Chocolate Utopias for dinner. And we watched AI (go Chris!) and Lost (whoa). All in all, a good day.

Lovely, thank you. 'im indoors has just started a new contract which means he’s working away from home during the week but last night he arrived unexpectedly on the doorstep with flowers for me! Woohoo! That was the best surprise of the day.

Our happy usual - takeout Chinese food, bottle of wine, a little dessert, sitting on the couch and playing video games. No gifts, no cards, no flowers.

Mine was neither happy nor unhappy. We had an ice storm that kept me in. But since I had no one to share it with anyway, it didn’t matter. It was just like any other day.

Ours was ok. I made a nice steak dinner and we made out on the kissing step. We choose to celebrate it on any day that ISN’T February 14th. That way we can dine without that-couple-and-their-infant-and-two-rug-rats-staring-us-down-so-we’l-eat-faster-so-they-can-have-our-table-at-Outback. You know what couple I’m talking about, right?

Great day! Kids came home from school full of candy but still ate at least some of the broccoli on their dinner plates. HoosierDaddy and I skipped dinner, and after tuck-in went straight for gigantic pieces of the chocolate cheesecake with raspberry sauce that I made. Washed it down with champagne and headed for the bedroom to…

Despite the horrible snow, sleet and cold weather, I waited a half hour for the bus to take me to Borders so I could get the first season DVD of House (a $60 value) for $20 on the last day of their sale.

How much do I love this show?

I was not expecting anything for Valentine’s Day, as I have been single for some time. So how did it go?

I woke up in bed next to a cute redhead.

And it only got better from there.
