Did anyone see what Falwell said?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A28620-2001Sep14.html

I hope this destroys him.

I hope the finger of god comes out of the heavens to smite him personally.

I’d like to see a pit thread for this, actually, because I’d like to tear him a new one. Actually, scratch that, I’ll track him down and do it to his face.

Ah, yes.

My mother, good Christian that she is, is mortified.

BTW.

Here.

And here you can say what you really want about it.

Jerry Falwell’s public life seems to follow the pattern:

  1. Say something wildly, insanely offensive.
  2. Act civil for a while until the original controversy has gotten kind of old.
  3. People start to forget your past foibles.
  4. The media begins to seek you out again as a semi-rational voice of the “Religious Right”.
  5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 all over again. Lather and rinse.

I can’t believe he said something like that. I wish this country was more religious than it is right now, but to say that this was the reason for the attacks is horrible and very counter-productive. I am a very conservative Christian myself, and it really saddens me to hear Christians say things like this. It destroys any respect non-Christians have for Christians. The reason for the attack was that these groups of terrorists hate the United States because we have a very important thing that they don’t have: freedom. I hope nobody takes these foolish remarks as the voice of Christianity, because most Christians, even conservative Christians, do NOT feel this way.

Yep, there’s a Pit thread. I think there’s two, in fact. Maybe more.

Sigh. He’s such a loser.

Such incredible ignorance, it boggles the mind.

A GD thread about Falwell’s remarks.
A Pit thread that started as a GD thread about them.
And another Pit thread on the topic.

Can’t forget that Pat Robertson agreed with Falwell all the way.

If mainstream black leaders are expected to disassociate themselves from Louis Farrakhan, why aren’t mainstream evangelical leaders expected to do the same with Falwell? The guy’s only said stuff in the past like: Clinton had a bunch of people killed; the reporters who uncovered Jim & Tammy Bakker’s financial misdeeds did so “because they hate Christ” (I heard him say this one in person); and I’m sure others can add to the list.

For your “enjoyment” in the Pit:

Robertson + Falwell: It’s the Liberals’ Fault . . .

Jerry Fallwell on WTC

Pat Robertson joins the fray

And for fans of Fred Phelps:

The worst case of agenda pushing yet

Note to self: Wait one hour after eating before reading threads discussing Falwell, Robertson, and/or Phelps.

I almost wish that the Christians were right about judgement day, just to see these two hoist on their own petard. Not to mention Fred Phelps.

yum. crow.

“I sincerely regret that comments I made during a long theological discussion on a Christian television program yesterday were taken out of their context”

Yeah, right.

Where did you see crow in that web page? What I saw looked a lot like
“I’m really sorry that I got caught saying stupid things, but you have to understand I was quoted out of context (despite the fact that the entire show’s transcript was made available).
Please don’t pick on me (and can I distract you with some more of my knick knacks?).”

“Long theological discussion”? It was a typical, content-free bitch session couched in the language of shallow pseudo-Christian platitudes with all the theological content of an issue of Reader’s Digest©.

he just doesn’t wanna be lynched, ironically enough.

Hate helped ‘this’ happen and Jerry has plenty of that.
He should up his med dosage until the voices in his head that he thinks are God go to sleep.

it may not totally be crow, sure. but he’s still running away with his tail between his legs, the filthy mongrel.

All the advocates and pundits of hatred shall run, and keep on running away from all decent people, for the rest of time. For America and her allies will never rest until all of hatred is removed from people’s hearts.

What you’ve said is true of the overwhelming majorities of Muslimd, Jews, and others. None of “us” has a better claim on or to righteousness. The way I’ve always seen it, to the extent we pray, worship and practice, it’s to the same god, God, by whatever name he is called and whoever his prophets and disciples are. There are differences in degree, names and characterizations but in the long run it’s good, evil, morality, and so forth.
