The mother of a girl who didn’t make the cheerleading squad murdered a girl who did.
Wikipedia says it was girl who didn’t make the squad, not her mother.

A small group (3 boys and a girl) of the more rebellious teens ran off together - the story they had been telling some others in the same year group was that they would go to London and find a squat to live in. The girl was intending to make money as a prostitute; the boys by thievery or confidence trickery.
I don’t know if the story was a ruse to throw pursuing authorities off the scent, or if their plans just didn’t work out once they started running. The police caught up with them a day or two later, on the Isle of Wight (which is pretty much the diametric opposite of London in every way that matters)
A kid was murdered across the street from the school.
Students staged a walk-out in response to a racist teacher.
Rush Limbaugh accused the school of ‘not teaching real US history’ because students wrote a published essay he didn’t agree with.

More recently, my son’s middle school band does an annual joint concert with another middle school and the high school both feed into. A few weeks before the concert, after joint rehearsals had started, the other middle school’s band director was arrested for possession of child pornography. Yikes!

A girl committed suicide in the restroom.
She had a brother who went there; I believe he was her fraternal twin. After she killed herself, everyone knew who he was, on sight.
The year after I graduated, someone burned down the library.
The year before I went to the school there was a murder/suicide.
My senior year we had a teacher fired for teaching in a sports bra on a hot day with no AC who came back to school the next day topless and drove around the school at lunch hanging her tits out the window.
A couple of years after I graduated a student cut another student’s parent’s head off with an ax.
There was a mass wave of phone theft at my college. We were near a bad neigborhood, and it was common for students to be asked by passersby what time it was when they were near campus. This was a ruse to get people to take their cell phones out. People were running off with student’s phones every day for weeks.
There were “riots” my freshman year. Toilet rolls were lit on fire, ceiling tiles knocked down, and someone emptied a bag of live crickets in the middle of the cafeteria. I wasn’t clear on what we were rioting about, but the stories were fun.
The nuns fired the only male teacher after he knocked up a recent high school graduate. It wasn’t illegal (former student, 18), but there were rumors the relationship started before she left school.
Our (well-liked) physics teacher got sick for about 2 months. The first substitute teacher was a guy who clearly had never taught in a public high school. He had no control over the class, it was pitiful to watch. He disappeared after two or three days… then we learned that he had suffered a fatal epilepsy seizure at home.
Oh, we also had a Phys. Ed. teacher die of a heart attack during the school’s annual 3 km run.
They let me graduate.
Quite a few deaths from drugs and alcohol, teen parents, fights, broken families, and we had a student smoking lounge. So basically the answer is no; nothing outrageous by the standards of the time and the community. And except for the last, not all that odd today.
During the Alaska earthquake of 1964, parts of the second floor of my high school collapsed and the rest of the school was damaged beyond habitability. The entire school was closed and we were bused to the other high school for the rest of the school year.
The Junior High School Principal – a man – walked into the Girl’s shower room.
Why the hell he did something that stupid, I will never know. My mother was on the School Board at the time, and there was scarcely any debate at all: they asked for his resignation, which he gave. Lucky he didn’t go to jail for that, listed on the sex-offender registry. Really, really weird.
When I was in HS we had a science whiz kid who did his own experiments. He used to work hard and had packets of sugar in his pocket to keep himself going. He also had packets of arsenic in the other pocket. One day he went to the fountain and emptied a packet into his mouth and, it was reported that he sat down and knew he was going to die, and did right there. True, but I can’t vouch for his intentions or state of mind.
