Did I really just see this? Dog tBH to apologize by being buried with slaves...

When did the Vatican buy Monticello? Was it part of a deal of " We’ll hush up the buggering altar boys story line in the paper for decades in exhange for Gettysburg and Monticello?"

Mt. Vernon. Monticello was Tom Jefferson’s digs.

To atone for this error, you must now bury yourself in a field of dead historians.

So would the opposite then be a “nitey” or a “nonky”? As in, “Man, that Colin Powell is just one big ol’ nonky.” Or maybe “Nitey-night, that man just ain’t right.”

Oddly enough, both words have entries in urbandictionary.com, although they are not terribly popular.

I don’t know what the equivalent term would be. “Uncle Tom” comes close, I think, but that also carries other connotations (particularly of betrayal or selling out) with it. However, when I hear it used in conversation, it covers similar ground to words like “wigger.”

The best equivalent to “wigger” would probably be “oreo”–black on the outside, white on the inside.

So much for my bid to be listed in the funniest Dopers thread.

You seriously hear “Uncle Tom” in conversation often? It’s a perfectly contemporary word, I guess, unlike “honkey” and “whitey”, but I just can’t imagine it really coming up that much.

“Melungeon” is pronounced Muh - LUN - ghen.

[Re: “white trash” as a racist term, discussion of]

I’m with the opposition here. “White”, used alone, is (historically, anyway) a pretty much uniformly positive term: “that’s real white of you” used to be a genuine non-sarcastic complement. “White trash”, on the other hand, is a double insult; not only are they trash, but they don’t even have the excuse of being an “inferior race”. Only the compound phrase is insulting.

That is completely self-contradictory. If you are “behaving in a racist manner against an individual”, then you are by definition prejudging or discriminating against them based on their race, and you must therefore by definition “hold [a] thought [or] belief […] against everyone in that individual’s race.” If you dislike or distrust someone who is black solely because they are black, then you must hold a negative opinion of blacks in general. If you dislike or distrust someone who is black for reasons not related to their race, then you were not “behaving in a racist manner against an individual” in the first place.

I’ve never actually watched Dog The Bounty Vampire Hunter, but I’ve seen a few ads for it. It seemed like equal parts COPS and WWE Wrestling. Your basic growling, arrogant, musclebound guy gets to throw skips to the ground and handcuff them. He has the required WWE Bazonga Mama at home.

Is that about right? And did he specify that, in his unmarked grave, he’ll be buried face down, so his detractors can kiss his ass?

AIGHHHH!

Is there an actual one, or should I be chopped up into itty bitty pieces and send to the famous dead historians’ graves all over the world?
Cause if it is the latter, do I get frequent flier miles even though I am dead and can I will those miles to someone?

Oh sure. I didn’t pick Door #3.
thanks. Not that I will ever have a chance to drop Melungeon in a convo. It sounds like an SUV crossover.

I completely agree that the compound phrase is insulting. But it still means “white.” His argument is that it doesn’t mean “white.” And the term "trash"when applied to a human being is insulting in itself. In my fifty plus years in the South I have never heard anyone referred to as “white trash” who wasn’t actually white. If it is meant as a general invective, why use the modifier?

It was a hypothetical. I am countering Dio’s argument that if I call one Italian a “dago,” I am calling all Italians “dagos.”

It is entirely possible to use a racist term to refer to one member of a class, and have nothing but the highest respect and admiration for another member of the same class. It might be hypocritical, or silly, or unenlightened, but it is possible.

“Dago” is a term used to degrade all Italians, not a subset of Italians, and it’s used by non-Italians.

“White Trash” is a term used by white people to degrade an economic subset of white people.

“Dago” is a slur on ethnicity per se (I wouldn’t call it “racist” because Italians do not constitute a “race” in the way the word is popularly used). “White trash” is a slur on economic class and lifestyle, NOT on ethnicity or race per se, and it therefore is not racist.

White people need to stop trying to pretend like they’re victims of racist oppression.

I’d like to offer up as an alternative to the race-singed white trash the slur Lumpen-trash. Derived from the early Commie term Lumpenproletariat, meaning :

…it has evolved to meet the social scorning requirements of the third millennium. (What, we should scorn the organ donors still?)

**Lumpentrash **does not differentiate between the brown, the white, the man, the woman, even the poor and the flush. All shiftless scroungers are lumpen-people!

It is not a caste assigned at birth, but a state of achievement. The impoverished yet industrious day-laborer? The backbone of industrial society. The only-works-often-enough-to-theoretically-explain-his drug dealing-income, 5 children by 4 women before age 28, town cops know him by name brother? Lumpentrash.

Anyone who has ever poured soda into a baby bottle or gave Junior a lighter as a teether: L-T.

**Lumpentrash **are not just rural people. Trailers are not required. They can be found in urban apartment blocks and suburban basement suites- moving in the middle of the night to thwart the long arm of the rent collector.

They are all races, faiths, blood types and genders. They can be bone thin or, well, lumpy. They are the relatives from whom you hide your wallet. They are at the root of 75%* of all calls to law enforcement. They usually have hideous taste in music. They are the antithesis of the American Dream. Lumpentrash. By Mattel.

Another term I’ve seen used online by blacks along the line of “Uncle Tom” is “house nigger”. If I were to take a WAG at the etymology, it’d probably be from the idea that the slaves who worked inside the house usually were treated better than the field slaves and would sometimes even be fine with the fact they were slaves and owned by whites.

But as far as a “wigger” equivalent, I think Lemur866 is on the money with “oreo” being the closest.

Really Dio, you’ve been reduced to “My post is my cite”? That’s pathetic. Seems to me you ought to be able to use that University of Delaware degree for something better than “I know because I’m from the south”.

The black man is always keepin’ us down, man, what with their large penile appendages and whatnot. I remember participating in the March on Velma many years ago, and hearing Martin Luther Sheen’s famous “I have a career” speech. Brought me to tears, it did.

Anecdotal I know, but this is the way I have always heard it used as well, usually (though not always) a specific subset of poor white people- those who live on the dole and appear on COPS. Decent poor southern white people are usually called rednecks (though just as with whitetrash a person can be rich and still be called by the term, but most aren’t) or, historically, poor-whites.

Rule of thumb- if your car breaks down on an embankment, white-trash are the people who will vandalize it after going through the glove box and stealing the radio as you’ve gone for help. Rednecks are the people who will stop their pickup and manage to get it going again with a dog collar and some WD40.

Regardless of how it’s used, it is not equivalent to nigger. Period. It does not carry the historical weight. Poor whites were definitely opressed all through southern history, but they weren’t slaves and couldn’t be raped/beaten/sold away from their family/mutilated/killed/worked-to-death with complete impunity by the wealthier classes (not to say crimes didn’t occur, but if a rich white man raped a poor white woman there’d be repurcussions, if a black man so much as made an improper remark towards a poor-white woman [as with Emmet Till] he could be killed with damned near impunity, and yet at the same time, in Alabama at least, no white man ever went to prison for raping a black woman until after the 1950s. The “in living memory” history behind the words are not comparable.
