Does anyone know this?
If he has a “special report” on Mondays (like awards shows or big sporting event like the Superbowl), he’ll bump headlines (which was funnier when it was called “Small Town News” on Letterman) to Tuesday.
I’m not sure who was first, but Leno’s first Headlines book came out in 1989, several years before he started the Tonight Show. In any case, they’re really two different skits and I’m surprised anyone would think that Small Town News was funnier. Or even funny. Obviously, tastes differ.
But of course the piece isn’t original. The Columbia Journalism Review has had a page of similar headlines on its inside back cover since the 1960s.
Otherwise, you’re correct. I’m betting that Headlines will be back on Mondays starting Monday. I’m looking forward to it.
