Did my friend have a "blackout"?

My friend was driving in her car, and she fell into what seemed like a dream state and then ended up in the left-hand lane, no blinkers on. She suddenly came too. Her foot on the break, as if she were about to turn into a parking lot. She experienced a kinda ‘deja vu’ like feeling.

She talked about avoiding carbs in her diet.

The whole experience seemed fuzzy to her, I wish I had more details. Any help would be great. I’m concerned and curious.

She should see a doctor before driving again.

Moving this thread to IMHO from General Questions.

Yeah, she will. She’s been freaked out about it.

I highly doubt a low carb diet had anything to do with this. She should see a neurologist stat.

I suppose its remotely possible she was hypoglycemic from the diet.

That’s possible, yes.

If she’s REALLY low carb (i.e. No carb) she could have also been ketotic. True symptomatic hypoglycemia in a non-diabetic is pretty rare.

Yep, neurologist stat.

Sounds like a possible seizure to me. Seizures come in all forms, not just the “twitching on the floor” variety.

They can also start at any age without much warning. I should know. :frowning:

Thank you guys and gals… I will tell her.

could the “dream state” have been, you know, dreaming? Maybe she fell asleep? She would hardly be the first person to fall asleep while driving. How much like “waking up” was the “coming to”? Was it night? Was she tired?

Hypoglycemia, at least for me (as a type 2 diabetic) doesn’t really just suddenly come on and then suddenly go away. Well sometimes it suddenly comes on, when I’m moving around a lot, but not sitting. And when it comes it doesn’t immediately make you black out. And for me, at least, it’s quite hard to come out of fully. Takes a long time.

My aunt blacked out while driving once. She has heart problems and her blood pressure dipped way down. So could be neurological, could be vascular…

It sounds like it might be a focal seizure. The deja vu, weird, “out of it” kind of state?

When I get them, my thoughts generally turn to word salad (like the infamous “shoehorn butterhorse” post) Ask her if she has anymore details – weird sounds, smells, visual auras, any physical sensations, etc?

Generally they only last a few seconds, but if she’s having them, she should see a doctor ASAP. And avoid driving for the time being. Good luck!

And it could be reactive hypoglycemia. If she’s been going really low-carb, then ate some carbs, her blood sugar could have risen sharply then taken a nose-dive. I have an acquaintance who no longer drives because she has severe reactive hypoglycemia, due to a gastric bypass.
