I’ve been lurking on the Something Awful forums for a long time; in fact, I just read some threads as recently as yesterday. When I try to read any of the threads, though, I’m redirected to a web page indicating that “you must be a registered member to view this page.”
Is anyone else encountering the same message? I hope that board hasn’t started requiring that you pay just to read the thing.
Note to mods: While this clearly has a factual answer, I thought it was more appropriate to put a question regarding a leisure activity (i.e. message boards) in CS.
Based on my lookings-in over there, I’d guess they’re charging to make sure prospective subscribers don’t get to read the spewage that makes up the bulk of the content until their fee money is safely banked.
Well, that’s kind of annoying. However, I will say that I paid the one-time lifetime subscription fee of $10, and I’ve gotten far more than $10 worth of entertainment and education (heh) out of it.
I genuinely wish I had not paid for a membership there. I have never posted.
Anyone that wants it can PM me and I’ll send you the username and password - I will change it before I send it to you so you don’t get my standard and after I send it to you you can change the password to whatever you want.
Posting to subscribe just in case someone takes me up on the offer. If I get caught up you are always welcome to PM or email me if you want the account.
Unfortunately, it looks like their archived threads (older than 6 months) are still locked down to non-members. I think that is a more permanent policy they have in place.
Still looking for an account/password to use briefly.
My friends found an interesting thread containing a British girl’s photojournal, created when she was given access to several archaeological digs in the Mediterranean before they were publicly opened up. Apparently the photojournal was purchased in a flea market, scanned, and uploaded to the SA forums.
I’d be happy to direct anyone who’s interested to it, but without a password, it’s locked even to me.
I disagree. The one-time $10 purchase (which, mind you, is less than what a lot of us paid when the boards were pay-to-post for a few years,) gets you humor that can, at times, be equal to what SDMB was in it’s heyday. Yeah, it has more juvenile humor and whatnot, but it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. Mostly it’s because the SA forums skew younger than SDMB.
Not to mention you can get just as much, if not more, factual information and help with “what should I do?” type of questions than yo can here. They have a larger and more active member-base.
I disagree with people who say that SA is a waste of time. I don’t spend much time there (and I just read when I do; I don’t have a membership) but really, the content to noise ratio is probably about the same as here. It’s just that the sheer amount of posts at SA make it look like a whole lot of crap.
There are some real gems there that I’ve remembered reading (not that I can probably access them, since they’d be archived).
Sorry to bump an old thread, but it seems that the SA Forums are once again member-only. Does anyone know if this is going to pass or if it’s permanent? I ask because previously, the forums have reopened to non-members within a week or so, but this time, it’s been like this for a few weeks now. I know some people post here and on SA; has there been any official announcement or the like?
