Did U.T. Just Make Kliff Kingsbury a Heisman Contender?

Until very recently, I thought this looked like another “Gino Torretta” year in the Heisman race- that is, NOBODY seemed to have stellar numbers, and nobody had had a huge game on national TV… so it seemed probable that the voters would tkae the lazy man’s way out, and just vote for the QB on the top-ranked team: in this case, Ken Dorsey.

Now, I don’t mean to insult Dorsey (or Gino Torretta, for that matter), but I think it’s fair to say that almost nobody is excited about voting for him. If he won, it would be pretty much by default.

However, I’m now wondering if the Texas’ Longhorns’ pathetic defense didn’t just propel Kliff Kingsbury of Texas TEch into the race. Even before playing U.T., Kingsbury had 4000+ yards passing and 40 TD passes (who else has comparable numbers in a major conference this year?). Kingsbury NOW has close to 5000 yards and 46 touchdown passes. Moreover, the UT-Texas Tech games was televised by a major network.

So, a lot of potential voters got to see a guy with big numbers, a guy most hadn’t seen play before, a guy many had never really heard of before… and they got to see him put up huge numbers against a top ten team.

So, a few questions…

  1. Was that game televised nationally, or just in Texas? (It makes a huge difference in terms of votes.)

  2. Is Kingsbury now well-positioned as the Dorsey alternative voters have hoped for?
I happen to think he was a worthy contender before last Saturday, and SHOULD be a front-runner now. And IF he puts up decent numbers against Oklahoma next week, I think he should and will win the Heisman… even though he had NO chance of winning just last Friday.

I takes more than one game to overcome the inertia of a season of Heisman hype I just don’t see it happening. If it was possible for a Late emerging candidate to win, then Kingsbury would have a lot of competition with Larry Johnson’s monster numbers lately
