Did you get MLK Day off?

Today was the observed birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Did you get the day off in whole or in part (obviously only for workers in the U.S.)? What field do you work in? For that matter which holidays do you get off besides Memorial/Independence/Labor/Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year’s, if any?

Yes, I had MLK day off. I’m in higher ed. I also get these holidays, in addition to the ones you listed:

Presidents Day
Good Friday
Patriots Day
Rosh Hashanah (when it’s on a weekday)
Yom Kippur (when it’s on a weekday)
Columbus Day
Thanksgiving Friday
And the week between Christmas & New Year’s

My mandatory holidays, including MLK.

Yes, I was off today. Also in higher ed.

Yes I was off today. Military.

Today was a holiday for me, except that I was working on a special project all weekend, so I wound up getting 12 hours of holiday pay (on top of another 15 hours of overtime Saturday and Sunday).

It didn’t suck.

Sadly, yes, I did. Since I work contract, it cost me several hundred dollars in unbilled time.

Last year? Me yes and my husband no. This year? We are both retired. My husband has never gotten it off; it’s a busy time in his business. I taught public school. The kids always had it off but some years the teachers went in for meetings.

I was off. Higher Ed.

I work in higher ed also. We get MLK (spring semester starts tomorrow), spring break of course, Memorial Day, July 4th (the latter two if you teach in summer), Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and winter break.

Of course staff and administrators on a 12-month contract don’t get spring break, and a truncated winter break (usually just a day or two around Christmas).

Yep.

Yes. Not-quite-as-high-as-the-others Ed.

Only because Monday is my scheduled day off. My store was open.

Joe

Technically, but I was here with the rest of my lab, including the boss. I’m trying to publish something and initiate Operation GTFO, so skipping work is counterproductive.

Nope.

I’m a teacher.

I know, we usually do. However, this year the day was too close to our return from Christmas break(Jan. 9), so we did not have it off. Very odd.

Same here. I was surprised that the university chose to remain open. They did have commemorative events, but many students took the day off in protest, so attendance was low.

Yes.
I did the preliminary work on setting up the 50 gallon aquarium!

Goodness, no–the commuter train was pretty full, too, so I’d say most other people in New York were working, too.

Unfortunately not, Canadian.

Yes, but only because our part-timer could work today so it became one of my days off. It’s not a paid holiday for us. I work retail.
