Dietary Restrictions Aside, the Nigerian High Court Can Bite Me

“Dietary Restrictions Aside, a Nigerian High Court Can Bite Me” lacks the punch of the actual thread title, because it really isn’t specific. Also, the phrase “the Nigerian High Court”, clearly, from the context of the post, refers to the Nigerian Islamic High Court. So Monty, by bringing up another court, in this case the Nigerian Supreme Court, that effectively confuses the issue of who should be bitten. Eve, in her second post, clarified that the Supreme Court shouldn’t feel free to bite her, but only the Islamic High Court.

I don’t really understand what you think she was insinuating.

I’m trying to find the link now, but I recall reading on a website the other day that one woman is killed every two hours by a male relative under the “honor killing” provisions of Sharia law (the figure doesn’t include just Arab nations - Sharia law is practised in other Muslim countries).

Yeah, apparently it’s practised quite a bit in Jordan. However it is TOTALLY illegal, unsanctioned by the (very progressive, “westernised”) government, and there are ongoing campaigns to try and stop the practice.

And also in Lebanon:

But it’s still a very bad situation, the penalties are no way hard enough (they may just get a few months) however women and more progressive-minded men are gaining voice and strength and the practice is hopefully at least reducing.

As for the OP, yeah - fuck the Nigerian evil bastards that oppress their people and pervert the name of Islam.

Oh yeah - and just one more point that shouldn’t need to be made but does - the vast, vast majority of Muslims also abhor the events in Nigeria. Last night it came up in conversation - as well as issues in Saudi and Afghanistan - with a group of Iraqis, Algerians and Palestinians I was with - and they were as shocked and angry about it as any of us here. And probably more so, because it tainted their religion.

Just as an aside, I wonder what would happen if Obasanjo nationalised the oil and threw Shell out on their arse. I’m thinking Bush and Blair would disentangle from their 69 and slap Axis of Evil status on the Nigerians P.D.Q. using incidences like these as partial justification. I have a feeling that he’s learnt from Abacha; you can slaughter with impunity but don’t inconvenience the white people.

“I’d had a lovely supper, and all I said to my wife was, ‘That piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah.’”

Mersavets, doubtless you meant to say “my friends in the oil business” instead of “white people”, but yes, I think you’re correct.

Re the OP, it was a case like this few years ago that finally forced me to get off my arse and join Amnesty International.

You don’t have to agree with AI in all things (I certainly don’t!) but they can and do make a huge difference in such massive violations of human rights and common decency as this. I earnestly encourage everyone to join up.

I don’t know the details of what they’re planning in Nigeria, but here’s how it’s done in Iran.
