Difference between Stromboli and Calzones?

“Stromboli” is already plural – the singular is “strombolo.”

It would be, if “Stromboli” were in fact an Italian plural noun instead of just looking like one. But it’s not; in Italy “Stromboli” is a singular place name, a volcanic island near Sicily.

Like the Caesar salad, the Stromboli sandwich has a known history. We know who invented the recipe, and where and when, and we also know where the name came from (the movie Stromboli was in the news at the time).

I think it’s fair to say that, unlike many older and more widely-dispersed traditional foods, for the Stromboli sandwich there is a true essential form of the thing. It sounds like many of you are just getting a calzone under another name.

“Pizza shops,” for the most part, are little stores that may be able to put cheese, sauce, and toppings on a pie shell, but they don’t know much about the art of baking. What that usually means for the consumer is that you get what I refer to as “heated dough” or “flopped over pizza.” That is not a Stromboli!

And as any one knows that has tried it… it takes time to make bread. There’s a big difference between Italian bread and pizza dough!

Well, yeah. But if you just take the word for the food named after the place, it sure as shootin’ isn’t pluralized into “strombole”.

I assume it’s an irregular noun? I don’t know how you’d ask for one in Italian – “Potrei avere uno stromboli?” Non lo so.
