Throughout the years I’ve noticed some people, mainly celebrities may have a patch of hair that’s differently colored than the rest. Some celebrities that come to mind are John Hensen of Talk Soup that was on e!, and Jay Leno with his patch of black hair (Dr. Phil actually poked fun of it on tonight’s show). So is this something natural, or is hair dye used to create a patch like this?
I have a “patch” of lighter colored on one side of my head, about 1/2 way back. When I lived in the desert, it was very prominent (light brown hair with a much lighter reddish blond streak)
I never thought much about it until my daughter was born in 1987. My husband was part indian, she came out looking like an eskimo with jet black hair…and a PURE WHITE PATCH in the same spot mine was!!!
The nurse said that it is like a birth mark, only in the hair…she said it wasn’t too common, but she had seen it before.
I called her my punk rock baby, and thought “well, no one is going to mix her up with another baby for sure!” It has lightened up, like mine did, but it is still noticeable.
Sometimes it’s natural, sometimes it’s dye. It’s a fairly interesting look, so some people want it, and get dye jobs to attain it. Some of us are lucky enough to have it naturally.
I have a patch of redder brown/coppery red (depending how much sun I get) at my right temple. My hair is brown, on the whole.
I’ve noticed some guys have a patch of white hair - I think it looks gorgeous. I had a major crush on a guy with a small patch of white hair at the very front of his head. swoon

My uncle developed a patch of white hair just off center above his forehead when he was in his early 40’s. He would get razzed about it during family gatherings. He even tried to dye it once. Now that he is in his 60’s and the rest of his hair has turned gray, it is not as noticable.
I had very dark brown hair until I was about 18, then I started to get a light spot right at my hairline, right where I part my hair. It got lighter and lighter and eventually went completely white. My older brother had the same thing happen, in the exact same place. It is a birthmark. Now, I have salt and pepper hair, but it is still lighter in that spot.
WeRSauron - how you doin?
Quite uncanny… I was just about to ask this question!
I was born with a patch on one side of my chin without pigment. When I was a kid the doctor pointed in out but never gave an explanation. I guess it’s just a benign mutation. I once forgot to use sunblock and this one spot burned and blistered while the rest of my face tanned.
When my beard came in, the whiskers in that spot didn’t have any pigment, either. I grew a beard and had this white streak on one side. (Interestingly, the hair is actually clear, but when you have a bunch of it, it scatters light and looks white.) I remember someone in the Carter administration (IIRC) had the same thing in his beard. Lots of people have the same thing in various places. As far as darker patches, I suppose you could have this in reverse. Dunno.
My dads hair is all sorts of crazy, he has ginger, brown, black and (now hes near 50) grey patchs. His hair used to be quite ginger when he was younger but most of it went dark brown as he got older, now hes going grey the ginger patches seem more obvious.
