I was talking to a coworker who is a redhead with two sons who have red hair as well, about how all three of them and the three of us redheads in my family (Mom, Vynce and I) had hair when we were born. It’s a terribly small sample size, but it did make me wonder if redheads were more likely to have been born with hair. It also made me wonder if there were hair colors that were more likely to be bald at birth. This warrents a Doper Poll!
So:
Were you completely bald at birth, or did you have some, or a lot of hair?
If you had hair at birth, what color was it? Did your natural hair color change between birth and adulthood? If so, when? More than once?
What’s your natural hair color now? (at least as best as you can remember )
I had some hair, at least enough to easily tell it was red
My hair has been the same color since birth (sun bleaching not withstanding)
I had hair on the left side of my head, but the right side was absolutely bald. Nowadays, even though it isn’t noticeable, the left side has a little bit less hair.
I also had long, soft, golden fluff on the small of my back. My momma really loved it. But it fell off within a couple of months.
I had little wisps of very dark hair at birth, I soon became a tow-headed baby like my siblings. Both parents had dark brown hair, all 4 kids were white blonde toddlers, gradually going darker at varying rates.
I was an actual blonde until puberty, dirty dishwater light brown since then. I no longer have a natural color, tyvm.
I’m a basic WASPy mutt, my ex-h is Native American, our son was born virtually covered in hair. His hair was so long it’s parted on the side and combed over like a little business man 'do in his birth picture from the hospital. In our extended family, that’s the way it seems to go, the darker babies have thick hair from go, the paler/blonder babies are nearly bald until about 3.
Hair, very light brown, though not a great deal of it. I have a sample of it in the baby book my folks kept, as well as newborn pictures (B&W). It darkened substantially by age one or two.
These days, about 50% dark brown, 50% gray.
All my kids and grandkids were born almost white blond/blonde. All but one has become a brunette or dish-water blonde. The only one remaining true blonde chose to color her hair auburn red.
No baldness in either side of my family’s blood kin, though several blood kin married bald men. No bald women to speak of in my blood relatives, but some had significant thinning in later life. (Not joking here – alopecia is no laughing matter.)
Were you completely bald at birth, or did you have some, or a lot of hair?
Some – like chicken fuzz
If you had hair at birth, what color was it? Did your natural hair color change between birth and adulthood? If so, when? More than once?
Reddish blonde, red as a toddler, blonde as a child and teen and maybe through 30. Light brown now.
What’s your natural hair color now? (at least as best as you can remember )
Light brown with gray. Nearly the same hair history as Queen Tonya. It’s possible I was blonder for longer because of the sun.
FWIW, some of my friends were born with lots of dark hair, which fell out, and then had lighter hair grown in. A friend of mine’s baby was born with loads of jet black hair – it was long enough to need a cut. Enough that I called the child “King Kong Baby!” At two, she has a thinner head of chestnut hair.
It stayed the same color. But I do have an interesting aside. When I was about a week old (maybe a little older), my parents shaved off all my hair and then let it grow back. Apparently, that’s supposed to make hair grow back thick and wonderful and all that. And my hair is strong and thick and beautiful, so maybe it worked.
It hasn’t changed colors since, althought it used to be really curly when I was younger. Now it has a more subtle wave to it.
For the record, I’m Asian. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I do have thicker/stronger hair than most of my Caucasian brethren.
I was born with a full head of black hair, very fine. Both my parents have black hair, but over the years my hair started to lighten. My brother was born with dirty blonde hair, but over the years his hair turned black. I’ve since dyed mine black again, and it looks natural, but I think if I let the dye wash out I’d naturally fall into a medium-dark brown.
Black hair, lots of it, I look like a little punk rocker in the pictures taken 20 minutes after birth!
It stayed black and then became dark brown with hints of auburn around age 20. Unfortunately, the hair on my arms, etc. stayed black while my skin is pasty pale. Not the nicest thing for a girl. Oh well.
FWIW, second sibling has black hair all his life but was cueball bald as a baby. Baby bro born with a little bit of straight brown hair, has slightly darker brown hair now.
I love it when little black baby girls have enough hair so their moms can pull it up into two little puffs like panda bear ears. Soooo cute! </hijack of slightly questionable taste, but sincere sentiment>
I was bald. Really, really bald. Bald as bald can be. Didn’t have hair until I was about 3 months old. Now it’s thick, dark, and a bit curly, at least on my head.
