What I get is that you are reading your own political bias into a very simple non-descript and non-informative statement. How do you know Wildfire isn’t a Pinochet supporter? For that matter, how do you know he isn’t just yanking our chains by posting something inflammatory to see people get worked up? Because that’s what I see here. Of course, I don’t have message board ESP like you do, so maybe I’m mistaken.

The thread was crap IMO but so what? It’s meaning was very obvious IMO and it’s placement in the pit confirmed that it was meant to be a dig.
It could have become a very interesting thread if let run it’s course. If it hadn’t have been a 9/11 thread it wouldn’t have been shut down from my experience of this board.

My thoughts on seeing the locked thread was the idea that “not today,” was the response to the post about remembering the significance of the date in Chile, as if 364 other days of the year Americans are perfectly willing to have a frank and open discussion about the bullying role our government has played in world affairs.

What if – and this is just a “what if”, I do not claim to be a mind reader – but what if Wildfire thought to himself, “Hmmm, how can I yank the chains of a bunch of Americans about this date? Let’s go look in Wiki and see what I can find. Hey, look at this, Allende was overthrown on this date in 1973. I’ll just post that date!”
Get the idea? Wildfire doesn’t “need” to care one way or another about Allende or Pinochet and the events in 1973, all that’s required is a troll finding an interesting date in the Wiki.

A date is just a date. In this case, probably a reference to a specific historic event. It doesn’t say anything about that date, it doesn’t pass judgement about the event, it doesn’t fucking say anything! My purpose in illustrating other possible interpretations of the date, and thus the event, was merely to show that there are other possible interpretations. I am not, as you seem to think, outraged that someone is trying to stir shit. I am simply stating that such content-less OP’s as the one posted by Wildfire should indeed be closed.

Actually I’ve just googled and found out what it’s about but I was just using a turn of phrase I had no idea it was linked to baseball.
Other than that your opinion obviously varies. You will notice that I didn’t post a post of support in the original thread. I did post in it however. It made perfect sense to me I have to say. It was lazy and useless but again, the posts that were coming in after the OP had some merit.

Sorry if I came off a bit rude, yojimbo. As your post followed elucidator’s I guess I was still a bit worked up. To be honest, I’m not even vaguely a baseball fan; I guess when you live in the US you kind of absorb some of this stuff through osmosis. But if it makes you feel better, I had to google “Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh” …
