Diner breakfast! Whatcha having?

The last time I was in a “real” diner the waitress had a cigarette in her mouth.

This is important also. And not plastic-wrapped, unless they’re mint or cinnamon toothpick. A plain one better be in a metal dispenser with a weighted knob. Twist, toothpick falls into its cradle.

I’ve seen that with some of the cooks. And this a no-smoking law area. Just makes the hash browns better.

We need to have breakfast some day.

Boom, you got my food spot on. Only I’ll have no gravy with my biscuit, just butter and a shit ton of strawberry jam. Also I’ll have a Dr. Pepper or Barqs to drink (if they have Pepsi) if they’re a Coke place, I’ll have a Coke with some lemon wedges in it.

At Willoughby’s at the Airport Honolulu Hotel, I had their ‘bamboocha’ (big) breakfast. Two rashers of bacon, two sausage patties, two slices of grilled linguiça, two eggs (over, easy), two pancakes, and damned-fine coffee.

The only thing ‘Hawaiian’ about it is the name (which was invented by Fanta) and the Portuguese sausage, but it was good. I finished most of it.

Waimea? As in where the Canyon is? On Kauai? Where is it located? I don’t know much about the island myself, but Mrs. Cups’ family (mine now too I guess  ) has a condo on the island and the only place they go out for breakfast is Olympic Cafe in Kapaa, which was extremely good.

Is this on one of the islands too?

[li]If their eggs benedict is good, then I’ll have the eggs benedict[/li][li]if not, then an omelet with cheddar, green peppers, and onions[/li][li]with bacon on the side (if they don’t cook it to a crisp like too many places do nowadays - if I bend a piece of cooked bacon, it should bend, not break)[/li][li]or patty sausage if I don’t trust their ability to cook bacon[/li][li]a sweet roll or danish of some sort[/li][li]and coffee with cream and sugar[/li][/ul]

Biscuits and gravy, sausage patties, pancakes, orange juice.

I’m really into the bread-type breakfast foods, not at all into the traditional eggs and bacon and such.

So for me, tall stack of pancakes with butter and syrup, or Belgian waffle with blueberries. Possibly a biscuit on the side, with butter. Just ice water to drink, maybe hot chocolate if I’m feeling indulgent.

Full English, please. Failing that, Eggs Benedict or Norwegian.

Three Buttermilk pancakes with real Maple Syrup, a side of bacon (come to think of it, bring an extra side of bacon), rye toast and a large Orange Juice.

Nope, the town of Waimea on the Big Island. It’s an up-country cowboy kind of town. Their yelp review page has way more info, including photos, than their website.

The other places I think are on Oahu. But good loco moco is to be had on any of the islands. That’s a real he-man breakfast; the ones I’ve seen could feed four people easily.

I’d like a ham & cheese omelette, grits, hash browns, toast w/butter, pancakes or waffle w/syrup, orange juice and a coke.

If we’re at Fat Nats, it’s Jacob’s Omelette - carnitas, fabulous salsa verde. Get a side of sour cream. My sister is a benedict person and says they’re really good.
If we’re at First Crack, it has to be their Huevos Rancheros with a popover as a starter.
We have a Sunday breakfast tradition in our house, trying new restaurants almost every weekend. Fat Nats and First Crack are our home bases, though.

If we’re hitting a new diner, I go with two eggs, over medium. If they have real sausage (versus Hormel links), I go with that over bacon. English muffin with jam. Water to drink.

Loco Moco on any island, lots of variations, killer meal.
Big City Diner is a local small chain on Oahu.
Don’t forget the Portuguese sausage or SPAM:eek: as sides. SPAM is good with all meals

I made loco moco for Mrs. L.A. one night. IIRC, she wasn’t feeling especially well. She liked it. It was good ‘comfort food’. I left off the egg, as I’ve never had it with an egg on it.* And I admit I used a packet of gravy mix. It’s a good quick meal.

  • We saw a commercial last night, where one of the burger chains had a burger with a fried egg on it. Mrs. L.A. thought it looked disgusting. She’s had burgers with eggs on them before, but I think that her tastes have changed as she’s aged. Personally, I like an over, easy egg with American cheese and a green (Ortega) chile.

But I’d rather have chicken-fried steak at a diner, than a burger for breakfast.

See? I told you my island knowledge wasn’t good. That said, we’re going to island hop a bit more next time, I’ll try to remember that in a year and a half

A lot of places have either an eggs/meat/biscuit type combo, or a pancakes/waffles/french toast plate, with or without meat. My challenge is always to find a way to have a little of both without blowing my budget or my stomach. That usually entails ordering a regular breakfast plate with either a side of eggs or a side of french toast, whichever makes it come out the cheapest.

Ideally I could get scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage depending on my mood, or both if I’m feeling lavish, french toast and maybe half order of biscuits and gravy. Douse the meat and french toast with syrup and keep the eggs and biscuit and gravy on the other plate. Wash it down with OJ and bottomless coffee. And hope I’m hungover enough to fit it all into my stomach, but not so hungover that I barf it all back up.

I really could care less about the potatoes, but they usually throw them in anyway. I vote for hash browns or tots over home fries for sure. Crackerbarrel’s hash brown casserole is a step above the rest, however.

I’ve been on a french toast kick lately, because it’s so easy to make at home and it has the best texture I think. Thin and crispy waffles like they have at Waffle House are great too, but I’m not a big fan of the fluffy, soft Belgian kind. And pancakes always turn to mush, but can be really good until then if made right. Crepes are popping up in restaurants all over now, but I usually don’t get them, because I prefer maple syrup to fruit and whipped cream any day of the week.

There’s a diner in Bellingham called Arlis’s. Haven’t been there in years because The Missus would prefer that I cook breakfast. All the times I’ve been, your ‘bread’ choice could be toast (various types), a biscuit, English muffin, or three pancakes. So I’d get the chicken-fried steak, eggs, and potatoes, with the pancakes as the ‘bread’ option.
