Yup. Ditto the Parkway in Oakland. And the Alamo chain, which follows a similar model, is opening a new theater in the Mission district in San Francisco.
Near me in the suburbs of Chicago, there are a couple theaters owned by the same company, Hollywood Boulevard and Hollywood Palms.
They have a full menu of appetizers, salads, burgers, pizza, etc. They serve alcohol too (my wife loves their bloody marys). All of the food is named after movies and movie stars, like the Chuck Norris Chicken Sandwich which has a Buffalo style chicken breast in it - with a kick (get it?), the Chevy Chaseburger (cheeseburger), Mystic Pizza, and stuff like that.
They will do silly stuff like show Groundhog Day on groundhog day and such. Lots of times they have the stars from older movies come in and do a meet and greet with fans and have a screening of that movie. We showed up once when they were doing a screening of It’s a Wonderful Life and they had the daughter (the ringing bells and angel wings girl) signing autographs. They also have photos of some of the munchkins from Wizard of Oz. Then they do a full on Rocky Horror event every Saturday night at midnight.
We mainly go to the Hollywood Blvd theater. That is mainly stylized to evoke Mann’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood. It has a fake street as a hallway with parking meters and pictures of movie stars along the walls.
Each theater has theme as well like early Hollywood, or Wizard of Oz. There are long narrow tables going from side to side with aisles along both sides of the theater. They are stepped like a normal theater so that you can see over the head of the people in front of you.
And the best part are the seats. They are like office chairs. High backs with armrests on a wheeled pedestal. You never feel crammed, even in the newest movies. We saw the Avengers last Friday and while the theater was full, it wasn’t shoulder to shoulder.
We paid $8 each at the box office then another $30 for the two of us for food and drinks in the theater. The waiters/waitresses came around to get orders before the movie started and delivered the food while the movie was playing. It was a bit distracting but not too bad. I can eat and pay attention to the movie without any problems. And with the volume that most movies play at these days, someone could be eating potato chips right next to me and I wouldn’t be able to hear them over the movie. The food comes with plastic forks, knives and spoons so there is no clanging during the movie.
That’s where we see the bulk of our new movies now. My wife is really cheap and hates spending $50 at the theater alone, then we still have to go out for dinner.
