Diplomacy: SDMB's entry in the WorldMasters 2002 Tourney

Anyone notice that we (Fighting Ignorance) sit at #38 in the standings right now?

FTR, Wolley’s Mamoths are #53.

Yeah, I suck and one of my players disappeared on me. Ugh.

Bremen would be in the Kiel province in Dip. It was one of the Hanseatic free states, and it’s main cities are Bremen and Bremerhaven. Here’s a map of Germany that shows both cities. Bremerhaven is a port where the Weser meets the sea, Bremen is an inland port.

But maybe he meant Brest?

Well, my French aggressor has finally answered my emails, but not said much of use. I, of course, am telling him he’d make better headway against Italy than me.

Also, I may need to invite a Russian unit to help me retake Berlin.
Yes, I did mean Brest. I visited Bremerhaven years ago, and the name has stuck in my head.

1905 was a tough year for me (England) - my troops docked right smack in the Kiel Canal, but I lost StP and Norway both. (Ouch!) So I’m down to 5 units, but as the German empire continues to fragment, I ought to be able to recoup some ground in 1906.

Got a map or a link, RT? Unfortunately, our games doesn’t have a web site. I can send a map if anyone’s interested.

Omni, England held in Nwy and Swe last turn? Didn’t you say he stabbed Russia? He could have guaranteed taking StP for himself in F04.

My game’s next turn got delayed again till later this week. I don’t even remember what year we’re in any more.

I didn’t know there were dynamic standings, cool. Are we really 38 out of 173? That’s pretty strong. From what I’ve heard, though, we all seem to be at about 4 or 5 centers. Has anyone heard from Bluesman about his game?

Except Omni who’s got 7, of course. I just meant for the most part. Has no one been eliminated yet?

Yeah, he stabbed Russia because Sweden belonged to Russia. He promised that the move to Sweden was just a way of getting his Norwegian Army onto the mainland in Denmark, however by holding he kept the SC. So he couldn’t attack Finland. Those units can’t really support one another very well, I’m not sure how you think he could have guaranteed taking St Petes. I’m a little confused why he didn’t move to Barents, but that still wouldn’t have locked up St Petes.

So whats everyones opinion on the DIAS thing?

I’m still kicking. Hoping to manuever the game into a 3 way DIAS. Although I think I best get stronger, otherwise it’s going to be a 2 man deal without me.

Isn’t anybody else getting the Swiss Intelligence reports. I still am, probably b/c I’m actually working with the dreaded C. Lane.

In the interest for the fairness of a democratic response, this will also be posted on the WebBoard. This is we the players at hand circle like sharks, and where they will feel the most comfortable responding.

Now to the matters at hand:

Standings have been released,

http://www.cat23.com/wm02/showteam.aspx

and they prove Genevas campaign is both well founded and partially successful. 2 of the teams initally targeted occupy 2 of the top 3 slots, while a 3rd hovers just outside the top 10. Many have asked if the focus will now shift to the current top 5 teams. The answer in NO. Geneva is not lashing out at success, but rather is focused on well established members of last years teams that used new team names or shuffled amongst themselves in order to better hide - and hence ambush others - in their attempts at repeat success in this year’s tournament.

You see that the All Around Players and Equiperoca returned, but where did Team Talk go? The Continental Dividers and Is That a Ferrret…? all disappeared. Or did they?

Consider: The 7 Moths are actually 2 Ferrets (dreyer&magnusson); an Apolyton 2 (hingst), one Order of the Garter (john); 2 members new to this tournament (ferguson&janecek) and the infamous and oh so respected Toby Harris.

The Stepsons of Vashanka are 2 parts Continental Dividers(brawner&kline), one part Apolyton (ruff) 1/7 of the 7 Most Evil Men in the World (burgoyne) one part Ferret (perez) and a pinch of newbie (troy u). Do not forget Ray Setzer. We did before and never heard the end of it.

Almost half of Team Talk decided to play Risk this year (lane, dennehy & reddington), and were joined by another of the 7 Most Evil Men, 2 players new to this tournament and the Current Individual Champion: Erlend Janbu.

Consider this statistic: there are 13 boards on which players have been elminated thus far. Players from these 5 teams are on 10 of those boards, and 6 of these players are responsible for the eliminations.

It is time for new blood, but they are spilling yours.

Consider your course, 68 teams benefit from the removal of these top players. Pressure must be maintained into the next round, for the benefit of 68 other teams. Yes, Geneva is in that group, but this campaign is being pursued for the benefit of Genevas and sixty plus other teams. Do not squander the opportunity. Consider this as the boards enter the mid-game.

  • SWISS INTELLIGENCE

Ooh, sneaky. Five bucks says the Swiss are another team of experienced players, but better hidden.

Now, two dip Qs:

What’s DIAS stand for? I know what it means, but the expansion of the acronym is escaping me.

Can you convoy an army across land, or a land/water province? If you had a fleet on Con and an army on Ank, could you convoy A Ank to Bul? How about F Tri, convoy A Ven to Vie?

Draw Includes All Survivors.

As for the convoys, try them and see. Actually, neither works. If there’s some land, there’s no convoy.

Yes, real life ensued, I had to replace him with Steve, who I don’t believe posts here.

I meant 38 out of 73, of course. Which is still respectable.
Omni, if I’m understanding you correctly, all England really had to do to ensure taking StP by the end of 1904 was order Swe-Fin in S04 (in addition to the rest of his orders). He’d then have F Nwy, A Fin, F BAL while Russia’s got A StP and F BOT. Nwy S Fin-StP and BAL-BOT in F04 completes it. Instead he had Sweden hold in S03. I don’t see what he gets out of it unless he’s got an arrangement with Russia.
Hey ppg_shg, keep posting those as you get them if you don’t mind. Or just forward them via email; at any rate I find them interesting reading.
I’m Austria on board R173. Can it be coincidence that only one player from the top 10 teams is on my board, and he’s only got 2 centers in that game? I think not. (snurk)

How are we doing here fellas? I noticed that we are now on page 5 of 8.

I’m hanging onto 4th, but I’ve got 2 guys battling for leader status, and I happen to be sandwiched between them.

My game’s into the spring of 1907, and I think we’re headed toward a draw by the end of the year - there was a DIAS proposal at the end of 06 which the two big powers, France and Russia, favored, but I wanted to see if I could squeeze one more base out first by polishing off Germany.

If I can do that, I’ll have 7 units at the end of 1907, and little chance at more, since Russia’s strong (and I don’t trust him in an alliance), and France has been a trustworthy ally, so I don’t want to stab him, and I’m in bad position for it anyway. So a draw will be my best option then.

I’m tied for third and the board has solidified into a giant G/R/I/T vs F/E stalemate. Unless England and France start fighting, I think the game will end as it stands now.

Generally only the 1 and 2 players (with some 3’s) will advance.

And none of them will be me, dammit.

I’ve been told I was teed up because I’m high-profile on the Cat. Damn.

Nate ball, corner pocket.

I am negotiating with Russia that he’s better off working with me than dividing me with France. France, there’s just no talking too. Russia and France are definitely the big dogs, with Turkey doing well too, and I just wan

Damn - somebody must’ve stabbed him in mid-post!
