SDMB Diplomacy World Championship

Right. I know we have some Dip players here. And I’m willing to set up and run the SDMB Diplomacy 2005-2006 Championship series. Sign up here and send me an email (it’s in the profile) to play.

Rules:

 1. All who wish may play (excepting me) provided they are SDMB people.
 2. I may draft other GMs if we have too many players for me to handle.
 3. The number of rounds in the tournament will be controlled by the number of initial players.
 4. Advancement between rounds will proceed in this manner:
[li]Winners of any game will advance.[/li][li]In event of a tie all tied players will advance.[/li][li]In event the above rules do NOT work out to a number divisible by seven non-winners will advance based upon total supply centers controlled minus home centers not controlled at the endgame[/li][li]If point ‘c’ above leads to too many players then final advancement will be determined by lot[/li]
5. All chatter about the game should be off board or in this thread. Like prior Dip games on the board we want these to be low-impact.

So how 'bout it, folks? Do we have enough to make this work? Let me hear some noise out there!

I’m reading that as “In event of DIAS…” That can’t be right, can it? Does that mean that in the event a game is not completed the players with the highest number of SCs in that game will advance. If more than one has the most centers all with that number will advance? Or am I making it more complicated than need be?

I would consider a DIAS with this distribution:

Player A: 14 SC
Player B: 10 SC
Player C: 10 SC

to lead to Player A’s automatic advancement and a strong possibility for Players B and C to advance through rule 4c.

Ok, that’s more in line with what I thought they did before. I’d like to try this sometime, but I don’t really think this is the right time for me. How long ago was the last one (is it every year)?

I’m in, and I expect to get my clock cleaned. Should be fun though. What kind of deadlines are we looking at? Day? Week? Email incoming.

I would like to play but I have never done so before. If you have room for me thats great, if not I will defer to a more experienced player.

Oh, yeah, I haven’t played Diplomacy in ages! I want in!

Nothing personal, but you should probably find a game or two before taking this on, unless someone really needs a fill in or you’re just incredibly gifted in this area.

JC,

I’m getting requested to use a password to view the pages on your page right now, and would really like to see Fall 01 of Vanilla. Maybe the problem’s on my end?

Welllll I don’t mean to brag but the one time I played Kasparov in chess I beat him so bad he ran home crying to his mommy.

It’s been years since I played but I’m up for it. Off goes an email.

In that case, go for it.
I hope you kept all of his chess pieces, too.

Bumpidty bump bump

Gimme a break.

OK, I need some more players.

Shibb, I think you’re misinterpreting things. This isn’t for the International WorldMasters tourney. I want to do a tourney right here just for us. I’ll organize it if we can get enough players. No other players who aren’t dopers. This is for SDMB bragging rights only.

So let’s get some names, kids!

Eh, I disagree. I think Shibb was saying that under the presumption that it’s the organized World Masters tourney, not our own little competition. In any case, the most important factor is partcipation and sticktoitivness.

Don’t get bored and bail in the middle of the game, and don’t go silent to other players in 1908. If you can handle that you’ll do fine.

JC, as for me consider me a definate maybe. I’ll fire off an email once I make up my mind.

Bump for the weekaday crowd.

Omni’s right. This ain’t WorldMaster but rather ‘SDMB Masters’! Players of all talent levels may apply.

I need more signups. All are welcome.

Questions about the game? Ask 'em here. I’ll do my best to answer.

Okay, in that case I apologise and totally retract what I said to Treis. And since it’s the SDMB, I’ll play along.

If I can find a board, I’ll join up. What do they cost, now and where can I get one?

I haven’t played in more than a decade.

JC will post stuff on his website, www.wooleysark.com/dip/ so you don’t really need to have a board. You can go there and look at the online maps, etc.

A few questions.

(1) Is this game open to SDMB lurkers?

(2) Is there a reason why you don’t use the PBEM adjundicators (http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/) that most people seem to use? They support most of the variants that people want to play, they’re very reliable, and they have awesome options such as “grey” press (which allows the sender to remain anonymous).
