Diplomacy

OK, I’m in!
(Here’s hoping I get Turkey.)

I was worried the code might not work again, but I’m glad it did. Looking forward to getting this game going

OK. My son is having surgery right now. I’ll sign up if I can from my phone. Can we delay the start till tomorrow morning so I have time to read the rules

Unfortunately, there is no way for me to stop the timer unless I create a new game. I’d rather avoid that so people who read this thread can join the current game.

It seems you already registered. We still have some time until people join. When everyone is in, there is still another 24 hours before the first moves are due.

The video I posted should give you a quick and dirty introduction to the game that I’ve found useful. The manual is good for supplemental questions.

There are also tons of forums dedicated to basic questions, and I would be happy to answer any if you message me.

No problem. I see there’s a bit of time before the scheduled start. I should be able to get up to speed by then.

I’d be interested in a game - I played Dip online with fellow Dopers and others many years ago - but not at that speed; I just can’t give it the sort of attention that would require. IIRC, the Dip games here on the Dope ~15 years ago were more like a Dip year per week.

Great! I’ll post when the lobby is full and when people should make their first move.

I should say that webDip does not send notifications. I don’t know why. For how good this interface is, they dropped the ball with email notifications, which should’ve been a feature since the beginning.

Therefore, it will be your responsibility to check the game often, at least once per day, to make sure you’re not missing a move.

I don’t have the patience for one move per week. I could do two- to three-day intervals, but a week is too long. I’d forget what my plan was Monday and worry too much if my allies are really working with me, only to find out they betrayed me by Friday. No thanks.

We’d love if you could get into this game. But, if it’s too short, maybe make a seperate game for those who want more time between phases.

No interest in playing but I’d happily kibitz.

Four signups so far. I did ask my friend to join in. He’s considering it. Hopefully we hit a quorum.

Five players signed up with about 3 hours till game time. From my understanding you can play with fewer than 7 players although I guess it’s not optimal. Panther Modern, do you intend to have the game if we don’t get 7 players?

Also will there be a side-talk thread here?

I’m tempted to join…but the 24 hour pace scares me. In the olden days of PBE here on the Dope we did 1 year per week, but usually had pretty liberal GMs who’d dole out delays when vacations and life got in the way. Would hate to be that guy who didn’t get orders in in time.

We did not meet quroum, so the game got cancelled.

No worries, I made a new game, which still has 24-hour Orders and 12-hour Built/Retreat phases. Password is sdmb (all lowercase). I’ve also extended the pre-game time to five days. This will allow people interested in playing enough time to learn the rules and register for an account.

webDiplomacy has a good messaging system included in its interface, so anyone can talk to a particular country to strategize.

Conversations about the ongoing game can go here, if you wish.

Given some of the other responses, maybe we could double the deadlines to 48 hours for orders and 24 hours for retreats?

I’m in favor of this, too. It can make the game drag a little bit, but it can be tough to actually arrange things with only 24 hours, and a 12 hour window for retreats almost always ends up with someone missing a build.

We already have five people in the current game. I honestly don’t feel like scrapping this game and making another. Unless, people in the game are cool with that.

If the game fills, we will play this one and see how it goes. If it helps we can post reminders for people to make moves here, as, I’m sure, players check the message boards more often.

Luckily, webDiplomacy uses icons to determine if a player has issued orders and is ready (green check mark), issued orders but is not ready (gray check mark) and hasn’t issued any orders (red exclamation points). Therefore, you can remind people here who are at risk of missing a phase.

Does that work?

Does webDip allow the GM to pause the timer if an emergency arises? Is there any mechanism to revert mistakes or apply late builds when it’s not disruptive?

In my mind I like the idea of playing this game, but I’m pretty sure I would lose quickly. I’m easy to fool in a game.

On the other hand I would like watching my wife play. She has a Charisma of 20+ so it would be fun watching her work with her “alliance.”

I’ve never played before but the game sounds like a lot of fun. My biggest concern is that I travel a lot for work so I’m not sure I can count on daily internet access long term. I’ll hold off joining for now but if you do a 48 hour day I’ll try and get in on that one before it fills up.

Yes, the group can vote to put the game on pause if anything happens.

Not sure what you mean when you say “when it’s not disruptive.”

Do you mean delaying your builds? If you end the build phase with 6 SC and 5 units but don’t build anything and end the following year with 7 SC and 5 units, you get two builds.

Regarding mistakes: If you make a move early in the day and want to change it later, you can. The phase doesn’t end until everyone submits their orders and hits “ready.”

Both of you should play anyway!

The next game will probably be 48-hour turns.

Now, I can never play too many Diplomacy games. I’m willing to start a separate, 48-hour game if enough people are interested.

Please quote this line if you want this. If we get seven more people, I will make the game.
