Who the fuck do you think you are? Pablo fucking Picaso? What is it with the obtuse angles and the “behind the play” fucking camera angles? Not to mention the “jiggly-independant-film-hand-held-camera” shit!
The whole first half I didn’t have a clue what the fuck was going on! Every crucial 3rd down play, some kinda shit that I couldn’t make heads or tails out of! What the fuck? Shots of the band? The opposing crowd? Behind the line of scrimage? Did he just run for 1 yard or 17?
Fuck that! Give me my boring, non-jiggy college coverage. I can see the play and know what the fuck happend. It got better the second half (and we won), but I’m kinda pissed about the first half coverage.
You fucking better get it right next week in our victory against nd.
Right there with you, man. I get the feeling that the sales representative of the SkyCam routinely gives head (and possibly anal) to the guy directing the game, they were using the thing so much. And while it’s an amusing and “novel” camera angle, it would make so much more sense to use it exclusively for replays so we could, oh, I don’t know, actually know where the fuck on the field these plays were ending.
But, fuck it, we won, and I imagine our victory over ND will be on NBC next week, and I generally like the way NBC handles football. (Not the least of which being their restraining themselves to one simple bar on the screen, not porn-site-style popup hell like Fox sports.)
I’m in the USC band, so I didn’t see the game on TV, but I did see that funny little camera flying around over the field the whole game. I assumed they were using it to provide better shots, not to make it artsy and uninteresting for the TV audience. I’m sorry.
As for shots of the band, I can’t say object to that, as the band (in this case bands) are a big part of the experience, and showing a bit of them on TV just adds that element of the experience for the people at home. But I will admit that it should only be at times that nothing important is happening on the field.
Gozu, sorry. It’s going to be ABC again. Are you a current student? I haven’t met any other Trojan Dopers. At least as far as I know.
Hey, TJdude825, nice to meet ya. The USC band is definitely one of the things that made going to the games so much fun. (Especially since the years 1996-2000, the years I was there, weren’t particularly stellar in terms of the team’s performance. Come to think of it, the campus we had back then hardly compares to what what I hear you guys have there now. You also have a vastly superior batch of Song Girls. You lucky bastard, you. ;))
Anyway, truth be told, I actually kinda like the SkyCam, as it really lets you see stuff like holes, blocking schemes, passing lanes and all that stuff. Kinda neat in a “what the players see…kinda” kind of way.
Thing is, though, it sucks balls for “live” plays for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that it’s hard as hell to determine yardage on the fly from that angle, so you don’t know if something’s a first down or not until the replay or commentary. (Plus there’s just something “off” feeling about the SkyCam video. Maybe it’s just fear of change.) For replays, sure, it’s something new and kinda cool. Otherwise, just use the tried and true angles, please.
heh, I was just thinking about that very thing earlier today while watching the Jets play one of their two Fox games.
Assuming you were talking about the NFL, in fairness Fox only broadcasts games while many other games are being played at the same time, whereas during NBC broadcasts there isn’t fuckall going on other than the game they’re showing.
It’s not like NBC needs an extra bar to give Desperate Housewives updates.
I play a lot of Madden, so the SkyCam shot looks fine and normal to me. In fact, I’d love to be able to see an entire game from it, but it should a viewer-chosen option.
NBC only televises Notre Dame home games so the game will be on ABC.
I’m an ND grad but I agree with you that the coverage of the USC/Cal game was bad. If they’re not going to show the game, the only acceptable other shot is of the USC cheerleaders.
