Dirt 2

So I’m looking at the lap time world records for various tracks. In rally cars, no car is clearly the best - on different tracks, different cars have the top time. And often you will see 6 cars on the top 20 times list.

Whereas for rallycross and trailblazer, the vast majority of the top times are done with the RS200 or Dallenbach respectively. That seems… less interesting to me. I like being able to attack courses with a variety of different viable cars.

So I’m thinking there’s no reason we have to stick to a certain car type by track… we don’t need to do rallycross for london and you don’t necesarily need trailblazer for utah. We could do any combination we want. T1 trucks on Shibuya? Sure. Rally cars on Baja Sprint? Why not?

That isn’t to say that I don’t want to do any rallycross/trailblazer car events, just that I don’t want them to become a weekly staple since the RS200 and Dallenbach over and over again could get boring.

What do you guys think? What sort of car type/track combos do you want to try this week?

I’m thinking something like… Ounilla Descent and Shibuya with rally cars and Tanemara (or however it’s spelled, the malaysian land rush course) with Baja trucks. But that’s really just off the top of my head. What do you guys think?

Those sound good to me.

Alright, let’s do those then. Until next Tuesday:

Ounila Descent with rally cars
Shibuya with rally cars
Tanemara with baja trucks.

Gotta get my name up, last weeks scores are embarrassing!

I wasn’t sure if I should post your times because I didn’t know how much you tried. You mentioned when we played over the weekend that you’d tried a little bit… I saw some attempts with all-star cars so I let them in there. In the other race you had a time, but it was done with a rookie grade car so I left it out since it was clearly not a serious attempt.

But yeah by all means, join us this week.

It’s all over on Ounila Descent. I just ran a 3:16.37.

Best you can do is now just beat Mutton Time up at 3:22 to avoid the shame of not beating Mutton Time.

Damn you Beef, Damn you!

You’ve got me edged out on Tanamera, and I’m not sure if I’ll beat that… trying to drive the all star baja truck perfectly (instead of just ramming into everyone) is like trying to ride on top of some giant land whale.

If any of you guys are around, we’re getting a fairly big game together and we’ll probably be playing for a while, so just hop on ventrilo and gfwl and join us.

I’ll jump on later tonight if you guys are still on. Jackie will join. Hopefully I can get her to go faster.

Well I got stuck at my mom’s updating vista all night. Sucks.

That sounds much more fun.

My PB Shibuya time used to be with the Flaming Pink Escort but I beat it with a Subaru. :frowning:

Oh and Kinthalis you need to reclaim your Tanemara Baja Truck record!

I’ll be posting the results and new tracks tomorrow afternoon when I wake up, so tonight is your last chance at this week’s times. If you have any requests for next week’s tracks, go ahead and post them.

So I ran Ounila Descent with a Baja truck just since I was curious how well I could do with it now that I know the track well. If you would’ve had me guess beforehand how my truck lap would compare with my rally car lap, I’d have said it’d probably be 20-25 seconds slower. After all, the rally cars are little and nimble and the trucks are a land whale that have ginormous body roll.

So I ran it a few times, and I got… 3:15. In a baja truck. That’s faster than my rally car time and like 7 seconds faster than most of rally times everyone else has been running. I would never have guessed that I could be faster in a baja truck. Weird.

Results for this week:

Ounila Descent (rally)

  • F14Squall isn’t a doper, but he’s my friend and you’ve all played with him before so I invited him to be part of this competition.

I’ll post the new tracks later tonight, but I wanted to ask first how many tracks you guys wanted to do per week. I think 3 works, it allows a lot of variety without a big workload (unless you want to invest the time). Someone suggested we move down to 2.

My thinking is this. You don’t have to spend a lot of time on all 3 tracks… it only takes maybe a half hour to an hour to get fairly good times on 3 tracks, and it’s only when you start trying to shave .2 seconds off your run over and over again that it starts taking a while. Well, with 3 tracks, you have more options to pick which one you like and want to try to improve on … plus, if someone sets a really good time that you don’t think you can beat, you could always move on to another track. The fewer tracks we have, the fewer options as far as that goes. So you could pick the 1 or 2 tracks you like most and focus on those while just putting in a rough and dirty decent time on the second or third.

But I’m open to discussion. How many tracks do you guys want to do, and do you have any preferred track/car combos for this week?

Okay, we’ll just do 3 again this week. If you want to make a case for a different number, feel free. Or just work on whichever ones you prefer.

This week:

Peninsula Run (baja raid track) with rally cars
Hairpin run (croatia rally) with rallycross cars
Ensada (baja land rush) with trailblazer cars.

Don’t get Ensada mixed up with ensada sprint. The longer one that occurs at dusk is the one we’re doing. And remember that hairpin run will be with rallycross cars, not rally - I think the high speeds of the rallycross cars without the relatively easy mode of the dallenbach (if we were to do trailblazer instead) will make the one interesting and explodey.

I’ll be trying to join you guys this week, but as SenorBeef knows I’ll have to redo a bunch of stuff in order to unlock all the tracks.

As an aside, mucho kudos to Codemasters for doing this game right. I’m not talking gameplay here - that was already spot-on in the console version. I’m talking the PC port.

I already had this game for the 360, but bought it for the PC when Steam had its sale. I mainly wanted to see how good it would look as I had recently built a gaming rig. The game did not disappoint - it looks fantastic. By far the best-looking racing game on the PC.

But I spend a lot of my time on the road - could it possibly run on my laptop? Granted, it’s new laptop and I made sure it had a separate video card but it’s nothing crazy like an Alienware. It’s a Sony Vaio from Best Buy that I got for $900.

Dirt 2 fired up, never asked for any configuration settings and just started running at my laptop’s native 1600x900 resolution - and ran smoothly.

THIS is how you do a PC port, people! No hassles, run smoothly, look good, and recognize my controllers (in this case a wired XBOX 360 controller).

Now that all that technical stuff is done I can get busy posting some times!

I’m going to beat the trope at least once this time, or I’ll eat my controller.

About ~22 hours left in this week’s competition.
