I love hip-hop, but I haven’t gotten into the buying stage yet, so most of my exposure to new songs comes from top 40 Radio (I know, probably not very representative, and I plan to someday start a thread about “Alternative Rap” where I can get some suggestions for the “Really” Good Stuff, but for now radio is all I’ve got).
Anyhow, one of the new popular songs (I think it’s by Jay-Z, pardon my ignorance if not) is the incredibly catchy “Dirt off Your Shoulder” and the chorus goes something like this:
If you’re feeling like a pimp ****** Go on, brush your shoulders off Ladies is pimps too Go on, brush your shoulders off
****** is crazy, baby don’t forget that boy who told you, Get that dirt off your shoulder
(Expletives deleted)
Okay, WTF does that mean!?? I mean, what does dirt on your shoulder have to do with pimpin’? I thought it had more to do with dandruff?!? Or is it some slang term that I am too much of a hick to know about?
Please, fight my ignorance. This song runs through my head 24 hours a day now, and I have no f*in clue what it means!
Besides being a dance move, it is also the ability to put something behind you. Let’s say your boyfriend just broke up with you, don’t pout about it, just brush him off like some dirt on your shoulder. See the video if you can, it might help.
I don’t have cable, but my friend does. I’ll try to visit and catch the video. As for Gadfly, thanks for the short list. I think I’ll start the Alternative Rap thread today.
Kid_A , thanks for the insight. That does help… Not that it took up too much time from my day, but those lyrics kinda mystified me! That’s what I get for unplugging from the squawk box, I guess…
