It’s Hula Hana. Here are the lyrics, such as they are:
the lyrics to the song for Hula hana of kamana whala hula bay are as follows:
Who’s this Hula hana, of kamana whala hula bay, she will hula when you have a lovely gift she wants, youíll hear her say, bring me a pineapple that doesn’t sting a bird that swims a fish that sings, I wanna I really wanna, bring me a volcano that blows up all the molten jama and a blue banana,
I canna canna bring me a pineapple that doesn’t sting a bird that swims a fish that sings, I wanna I really wanna,
bring me a volcano that blows up all the molten jama and a blue banana, I canna canna and you can wackle all you wanna, while I hula all the day away, and you can wackle all you wanna, while I hula all the day away,
All the boys of okakokanoka island, gather all the gifts that hula hana asks, they have combed their island home, fulfilling each one, and its worth it when they watch her shake her grass, three, four, five
Bring me a gentle breeze that I can keep, an ocean that’s oh so deep, I wanna I really wanna,
she will hula when you have a lovely gift she wants, you’ll hear her say, bring me a pineapple that doesn’t sting a bird that swims a fish that sings, I wanna I really wanna,
bring me a volcano that blows up all the molten jama and a blue banana, I canna canna
and you can wackle all you wanna, you can wackle while I walk away,
and you can wackle all you wanna, you can wackle while I walk away, away, away, away!
Well, this thread gives me a chance to ask a question I’ve been wanting to for a while now:
What is the name of the public domain snooty, high-falutin’ “higher education” anthem-type song that parody lyrics are being sung to during the scene in which the famous line “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” is uttered?
The soundtrack on Amazon lists “Kellerman’s Anthem,” which is, I’m pretty sure, what they’re singing. I always assumed that they made it up, since Kellerman’s is the name of the resort.
I’m fairly certain that the tune is called “Alma Mater.” I believe it is public domain, as you say, so it’s basically tabula rasa for any lyrics anyone wants to make up.
Thank you for posting those lyrics, Beadalin (though the friends I’m going to serenade with the song may not).
Thta sounds right. It has the same tune as my husband’s high school’s alma mater. When we were at his sister’s graduation, I remember turning to look at him and saying “It’s the Kellerman’s song!” He had never seen the movie, so he thought I was a little crazy.
The VERY first time I heard my high school play that, I looked at my friends and was like, “Dude! That’s the Kellerman song!”
The resort itself is real, but the name is different. I remember seeing a news story after the movie came out about all of the problems they were having with damn fools injuring themselves trying to leap from the stage the way Patrick Swayze did in the film.
The tune was originally for the song “Annie Lisle” (more info at Wikipedia link below)
Cornell University’s alma mater song (Far Above Cayuga’s Waters ) was written around 1870 and was set to the tune of “Annie Lisle.” Cornell seems to have been the first school to use that tune for its alma mater, but the tune was subsequently used by many many schools for their alma maters.
