Discontinued types of items

I know of two recent threads dealing with specific brand name products, one I started, and this one.

But that’s not what I mean here. Instead it’s general categories of products which have gone missing and you can’t locate anywhere. For example I cannot for the life of me find a heat pad for the kitchen-you know, a flat pad which you place hot dishes on. Neither my local Walmart or Target has anything like that (Target had some of those metal ones on little rubber legs tho).

So what items which used to be easily located are now scarce as sin?

Do you mean a pot-holder? They are in the same aisle as the dishcloths and placemats.
One thing that I have been looking high and low for are Easy Off Microwave Oven Wipes. It comes in a packet that you put in the microwave and heat up. The steam/fumes loosen the grime, then you use the wipe to wipe it all away. I have only one left and I can’t find them anymore.

Easy Off Microwave Oven Wipes at amazon.com.

And if ya want a LOT of 'em, these folks will sell ya a case for 70 bucks or so. How dirty is your microwave?

Google trivet or hot pad and you should see some that don’t have legs. Several people I know just use silicone pot holders instead.

Plain glass covered butter dishes are a royal PITA to find these days.

Powder toilet bowl cleaners like Vanish seem to have vanished from stores (same for Saniflush). The powder was always much superior to liquid or tablets.

OMG thank you thank you thank you!

It’s not that dirty. I got the current package I have probably 2 years ago. I don’t have to clean the microwave very often, but these things are super and I want more. I’ll stock up.

I…didn’t know about these. What a great idea! I have to get some! Thanks for mentioning them.

Did you mean a heated pad, to keep food warm? Here’s one:

Potato Flakes, the things that you put in soup with vegetable flakes and those itty bitty noodles to make it more filling. I’ve gone to cheap stores, upscale stores, Wal-Mart, bulk food stores, Costco, nobody has them. Whenever I ask someone where the potato flakes are, they hand me either scalloped potatoes, or instant mashed potatoes. I’m starting to think that I imagined the product ever existing.

Dollar stores tend to have stuff like this. It’s like they are considered too common or so inexpensive that no other store will carry them, but dollar stores always do.

I would be a bit confused too. I always thought Potato flakes were synonymous with instant mashed Potatoes. There are the Potato Pearls that I guess could be thrown in soup as a thickener, but they are just a more evolved species of Instant Mashed Potato generally.

Perhaps you need to ask for “dehydrated potatoes” instead of “potato flakes”.

Small diced dehydrated potatoes, suitable for soups.

Dehydrated sliced potatoes. These are the classic “scalloped potato mix” dried potatoes. If you want them in smaller pieces for your soup, you can crush them with a rolling pin.

More glass butter dishes.

Thanks, but no. Duck Duck Goose nailed it, and I’ll likely order them this week.

Thanks mnemosyne and Duck Duck Goose. I just haven’t had much luck even at the dollar stores lately.

And DDG, that style is larger than I need, I’m just looking for a narrow single stick style.

This one from the Amazon selection looks like it’s designed for a single stick.

Target has something called a Country Simple Butter Dish, single stick, although it’s ceramic, not glass, and has a rooster on the top.

Does it have to be glass? There are ceramic, pewter, steel, acrylic, etc. single-stick butter dishes all over the Internet. I was quite fascinated to find one that retails for $154.

And eBay has butter dishes out the wazoo, too, of course.

I bet you could get 'em at a restaurant supply place.

I got one that looks just like this at my local supermarket (I go to Jewel, which is owned by Albertson’s), except it cost maybe $3, not $25 ( ).

If you have an Albertson’s or Albertson’s-owned store nearby, you might find one there.

Saniflush does seem to exist, if you buy it by the case. But why can’t you get it retail? It’s much more effective than the liquids.
