“A pretty good example of what we’d have called “alternative” if it had been released a decade or so later.”
That’s what I would’ve said at first before I looked this song up and realized it was recorded in 1999. In that context, it sounds more like it’s recapitulating alternative rather than predicting it, though there’s certainly something to be said about the group that they could record a song at the end of the century that sounded like it was already 20 years old. It doesn’t sound like the Blondie songs I’m familiar with, but then again, none of Blondie’s hit songs sounded much like each other anyway.
As long as we’re on the subject of proto-alternative songs recorded long after the fact, here’s one from the king;
Reviving this thread to throw out a new hit song that I absolutely love by a pop singer that I forgot about five years ago (about being a pop singer everyone forgot about five years ago).
Upbeat perky folk-tinged singer songwriter stuff. Like the chords, not your usual strumming. Male singer’s register is into the alto range, made me think he was female at first despite the male name (definitely higher than some female singers like Annie Lennox or Mary Fahl)… That said, I like it.
I love the way it builds from the flute and piano at the beginning to the electric guitar at the first chorus. Musically, it reminds me of Mike & the Mechanics or '90s Pink Floyd more than it does Parsons himself, but you can definitely detect his signature musical flourishes in there. The lyrics really make you feel the pain of this suicidal woman ready to jump into the ocean and free her spirit.
Gonna bump this eight months later because I was turned on to this song last week, and I feel compelled to share it with you as it was shared with me.
Fair warning; this song will change your life. Please ensure that you are sitting comfortably and are free of any and all diversions before proceeding.
Not sure if I like the voiceover (as a general rule, occ. exceptions for some Moody Blues songs)-and the “chorus,” as such, is a bit rude, crude, and socially unacceptable. But thanks for rezzing my thread.
