Shitty Songs from Your Teen Years that You Still Sorta Love

Private Emotion by Ricky Martin. Because I still get teary eyed when I see that backward burning hotel.

Give it to You by Jordan Knight. I think he thinks he’s hip hop. I just look at his Dockers and Old Navy turtleneck and laaaaaugh.

But…fuck! I’m still watching them on Youtube!

Do you like Pina Coladas?

Patches

Mannfred Mann’s cover of Blinded By The Light

My dad used to sing this - I was almost 18 before I’d realised that he hadn’t made it up.

Love this song.

Groove is in the Heart

Almost ten minutes of epic cheese: November Rain

Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit. (Holy shit that video had a lot of Cameos. Good times)
Or Nookie?

All the…Small Things.
Actually, I still very much love the Nu-metal stuff I have. And don’t mind the Blink. Tis the music of my youth… Heh.

Clearly you and I are of an age.

Add to yours Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong by the Spin Doctors, and Rico Suave by Gerardo, which I cannot watch without laughing now.

Ice Ice Baby… bum-bum-bum-dum-ba-dum-dum-dump…

More from my pre-teen years. Sure the guy is an supersize douchenugget dipped in idiot sauce, but it’s a catchy tune and I still remember all the words. Lord, how that depresses me.

Equally catchy is Bowie’s “Under Pressure” from which he plundered.

Is there more? Oh yes… there’s more.

Any and all things G n’ R. Weapons grade cheese-metal but I just can’t stop myself. Ditto Metallica.

“Can’t Stop Loving You” - Van Halen. Just beating out “Right Now”.

“Truly Madly Deeply” - Savage Garden. To be played at very loud volume in my off-road modified Jeep with the top down. The bewildered looks I get as stoplights are the stuff of legend.

“Safety Dance” - Men Without Hats. Cemented in Awesomeness by an equally cheesy but still entertaining in a ‘watching a train derailment’ kinda way movie, “Biodome”.

I used to listen to a lot of rap in my idiot teen-age “tough-guy” years. Some of it is still kinda catchy. Though there is something 31 flavors of wrong about a skinny white kid singing Tupac’s “Hit 'Em Up”.

I’m sure there are plenty more (I have a whole “Song’s I’m not supposed to like” playlist at home) but I’m supposed to be working and now I’ve got Vanilla Ice in my head.

OK. I’ll bite:
Naughty Naughty by John Parr

I’m oftentimes surprised at the things I’m willing to share with you people.

Paradise by the Dashboard Lights
Daddy Cool
Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?
Midnight at the Oasis
Rhinestone Cowboy

We should hang out.

Last Train To Clarksville.

Pop country in general. I’ve not listened since 2002 or so, but I still listen to a little bit of Garth Brooks, amongst others.

Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive.”

I also love some of that shitty dance music from the early 90s, like “Gonna Make You Sweat” by C+C Music Factory, and “The Power” by Snap.

However nothing will ever touch my devotion to “The Humpty Dance” by the Digital Underground.

Hah. Poor, misunderstood Fred Durst. Jesus, was there any songs besides “Break Stuff” that weren’t him whining about being fucked over by a woman?

I always loved their guitar player’s penchant for freaky costumes. Especially the black eyes schtick.

I liked them in the day, though. I think I still have Three Dollar Bill collecting dust somewhere…

Ha, that came on the radio a few days ago. It was awesome.

Did I mention that I like big butts and I cannot lie?

“Nah, nah, man, that’s Under Pressure by Queen. See, my shit goes like DIS: “bum-bum-bum-dum-ba-dum-dum-dump” See the difference?”

– Vanilla Ice, circa 1995

I actually still think a lot of Blink 182 stuff is good. Catchy and unapologetically sophomoric.

Then there’s Adam’s Song, which is so drippy with teen angst that I can’t listen to it now without laughing.

And then there are the Blink imitators. I still like Fat Lip by Sum41 even though it’s practically a textbook example of an objectively awful song.

Which reminds me of the wife of the Sum41 guy - Avril Lavigne. Awful, awful, awful, but I still love Complicated.

And I used to be a huge fan of The Offspring and loved The Kids Aren’t Alright, where they whine about a bunch of bad stuff happening to teenagers.

Actually, what was it with songs like that in the late 90’s and early 00’s? The Offspring song reminded me of What It’s Like by Everlast that’s basically the same thing.

What’s shitty about Last Train to Clarksville?

YMMV and all of that but I lurve me some Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong!

Some of my favorite shitty songs from my teen years that I still sorta love:

Rock Me Amadeus - Falco
Land of Confusion - Genesis
Too Shy - Kajagoogoo
Our House - Madness
Boom Boom - Paul Lekakis
I’m Too Sexy - Right Said Fred
Informer - Snow
Lay Your Hands on Me - Thompson Twins
Everybody Have Fun Tonight and Dance Hall Days - Wang Chung
Yeah, I was a teen in the 80’s now GET OFF MY LAWN!

MeanJoe

You just reminded me…I love that song!

Mine really date me:

Run Joey, Run - David Geddes
Billy, Don’t Be a Hero - Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods
Playground in My Mind - Clint Holmes
Strawberry Letter 23 - The Brothers Johnson
One Tin Soldier - Coven
Waterloo - Abba
If - Bread
Superstar - The Carpenters
Annie’s Song - John Denver
Dust in the Wind - Kansas
Into the Night - Benny Mardones

I got these from reviewing my iPod. Yes, these are actually on my iPod! And you will never convince me that some of these songs are “shitty”, dammit!
