Liked it very much. Heartfelt singing and nice guitar work; sounded a little like Gordon Lightfoot.

Toby Keith and Merle Haggard, “She Ain’t Hooked On Me No More”: Toby Keith & Merle Haggard - She Ain't Hooked On Me No More - YouTube

I’m no C & (or) W fan, but I’ll review it to revive my thread…

This kind of crying in my brew song can be overdone to the point of parody, but to their credit they don’t quite cross that line.

The Shins, “The Rifle’s Spiral”

I love The Shins since forever. I think they’ve lost something off their fastball on the last couple of albums (Chutes Too Narrow is still their masterpiece IMO, and that’s over a decade ago now), but this is a really good song. Kenning vocals and jangly guitars galore. The Tim Burton-esque video was a blast to watch as well.

Next: Bad Religion, “Sorrow.” For a bunch of flint-hearted atheists, these guys sure love retelling Bible stories (in this case, the story of Job.)

.

It’s all right. Decent singing, instrumentals, but didn’t really thrill me.

“You’re So Cool” from the True Romance score by Hans Zimmer: - YouTube

Hmm. Not often you hear the xylophone as a lead instrument. Mellow, but captivating and tightly orchestrated. It kind of makes me feel like I’m in an airport terminal waiting to catch a flight to a tropical paradise.

The Ting Tings - Wrong Club.

Tight funky bass line reminiscent of Daft Punk’s Get Lucky or Giorgio by Moroder, good lyrics that have more than one meaning, I quite enjoyed that.

Jackalope-Pretty Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0czgNkLzhw

The music sounds like Nine Inch Nails, but the vocals are almost bubblegum. It’s certainly an odd duck and I’m not really sure whether I like it or not, but I’m OK with having listened to it.

Turisas - One More.

Started all right - sounded a little like something from the Braveheart or Lord of the Rings soundtrack - but the lead vocalist’s growl-singing left me cold.

Louis Armstrong, “St. James Infirmary Blues”: Louis Armstrong & His Hot Five, St. James Infirmary Blues (1929) - YouTube

Wow, that’s an old classic. Slow mellow gentle groove…

The Verve, “All in the Mind”

Ninja’d! I’ll come back later.

Pretty good, though I wonder which 60’s psychedelic pop band is gonna sue them over this.

Liquid Tension Experiment - Acid Rain

Very fast, very aggressive. Whew!

Janis Joplin, “St. James Infirmary Blues”: Janis Joplin~ (early recording) St. James Infirmary Blues - YouTube

I love her delivery here. I like it way better than Satch’s rendition upthread; there’s something about his cartoonishly gravelly voice that (to my ears) makes even this mournful folk standard sound corny. (His trumpet playing on that version was divine, though.)

In fact, I like this more than a lot of Joplin’s more famous later material, where she started to lean on the screamy side of her voice more and more. Thanks for sharing it.

Bright Eyes feat. Emmylou Harris, “We Are Nowhere And It’s Now”

Too much male singer, not enough Emmylou. Not a bad song, though.
Teach Your Children - Kathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss

A good bit different from the usual CSNY radio version, but I like it. It has a world-weary but good-natured earnestness that I find very appealing. The original always reminds of the 1984 Presidential campaign, when it was sometimes played to support the Mondale campaign.

Hugh Laurie, “St. James Infirmary Blues”: Hugh Laurie Sings the Blues - St. James Infirmary" from the NYTimes - YouTube

It takes them about half of the song to get through the intro and actually get to the song, but it’s technically proficient and it’s not bad once they get there. Laurie’s vocals don’t sound sincere enough, though.

Nick Cave - Stagger Lee (since we’re on the roots-music kick here - very NSFW).

I think I like Lloyd Price’s version more but Nick Cave’s take on it is definitely more aggressive, and the point of Stagger Lee being a badass could have been put across with less expletives. The video was amusing. I’ve been listening to most of the second page posts and so far it would make a dynamite driving playlist, although I would probably cull St.James down to Janis’ version.

For your pleasure may I present Nicotina- Big Sugar Big Sugar - Nicotina (She's All That) - YouTube

Nice garage sound to it, and I recognized at least half a dozen shout-outs to old classic rock and/or blues songs in the lyrics, and plenty of clever double entendres to boot.

Electric Six - Gay Bar.

Ok upbeat uptempo alternative…LOL at the Honest Abe clones. And then the hamster…fun.

Fine then. Humor it is.

Weird Al, “Smells Like Nirvana”

Pretty funny parody. I liked when the guy’s head fell off in the crowd. And was that Mickey Rooney there, too?
