Discussion for the Israel-Hamas War: A thread in the Pit

“I call everyone that disagrees with me anti-Semitic and refuse to offer any explanations, even when they’re nice, but cry that no one is nice to me.”

Cry more.

“I was wrong. Israel is commiting genocide. It should pull all its troops out of Gaza and stop airstrikes there, and let any and all aid in” would make me happy.

In other words, I should embrace a lie and demand that Israel should commit national suicide.

No thanks.

Love how not slaughtering any civilians in another country is somehow “committing national suicide”.

OK, leave off the first bit.

How about “Israel should withdraw from Gaza, stop airstrikes and stop blockading aid”? Can you stomach saying that?

A temporary ceasefire for the purpose of establishing secure supply lines to provide food and medicine to the displaced, ideally under the supervision of a neutral peacekeeping force, would be a good idea.

Not what I said. :unamused:

I don’t have a strong opinion and haven’t followed the war very closely. Now’s your chance!

Why shouldn’t Israel agree to a permanent ceasefire and military withdrawal?

I tried looking up Israel’s demands but for whatever reason everyone wants to tell me Hamas’s demands. And I don’t read Hebrew any more. So I’m counting on you here, Smapti.

A permanent ceasefire that leaves Hamas in control of Gaza just means that another 10/7 will inevitably happen (probably sooner than later), Israel will invade again, and we’ll be right back to where we are now. Any ceasefire needs to at the very least include the presence of a neutral peacekeeping force, and probably also the establishment of a DMZ along the Israel-Gaza border.

So what is the endgame here, I can’t imagine any peacekeeping force volunteering to watch over Gazans indefinitely. Especially since there’s no local economy any more to feed off of.

~Max

Ideally, the de-Hamasification of Gaza.

Is that possible? Has a political movement like Hamas ever been neutralized? I’m reminded of the Taliban, Hezbollah, Al-Queda, the Islamic State, etc.

~Max

You don’t hear much in Germany about the NSDAP these days.

Destroying Hamas as an ideology may not be possible, but they can certainly be removed from power and suppressed.

The de-nazification of Germany is a very weird subject, from what little I’ve read. I don’t think Israel has what it takes to pull that off successfully, because if they try, the entire Arab world will retaliate. Probably Hezbollah first.

~Max

Are you sure of that?

But you must admit that it’s refreshing when Smapti reveals that the antifa mask is only that.

Is there a plan B, or is the feasibility of removing Hamas our only difference of opinion as to whether Israel should agree to another ‘permanent’ ceasefire?

~Max

The Plan B is presumably the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, which I do not support.

Neither do I.

Well, that was a surprisingly quick debate. Thank you for taking me up on it.

I’d always assumed it was hipster irony, like when Prince Harry, of all fucking people, wore a Che Guevara t-shirt.

It’s because I am opposed to fascism.
