“Disenchanted” on Disney+

This morning, my sister screened “Enchanted”, to put us in the frame of mind to watch the sequel “Disenchanted”, which we immediately watched.

As always, “Enchanted” lived up to its title (enchanting). I’m sorry to report that “Disenchanted” did the same thing.

One Doper’s opinion. Anybody else?

It is like many Disney sequels–100% unnecessary and 100% inferior to the original. Bland. Lifeless. Interminable. Uninspired writing. Unmemorable songs. Very much “direct to video” material.

The original was brilliant, with something for people of all ages. I’ve watched it maybe a half-dozen times. This one? I would say it is only for children but I suspect that most children will be bored out of their minds with it, especially with the two hour running time. The very existence of this is an insult to the original.

What a waste of 2 hours. I had low expectations and somehow it didn’t even come close to meeting them. There isn’t a single positive thing I can say about it.

I didn’t hate it as much the rest of you, but it was not just a cut below the original, it was an amputation below the original.

On the other hand, I’m glad Idina Menzel got a real chance to sing in this one.

Low expectation. Expectation met. I also am glad Idina sang in this one, it was the high point of the movie.

I did love Alan Tudyk channeling I think Ed Wynn as the Scroll.

I also was minded of Ed Wynn. Or of Paul Winchell doing his best Ed Wynn impression.

But I’m not going to re-watch it to make sure.

I wonder how many people see the title and think this is a thread about Disenchantment.

Well it does say Disney+ and not Netflix. Also the Movie Tag. That should help a lot.

Once again I must thank Dopers for movie guidance. Though neither Enchanted nor Disenchanted is normally my kind of movie, the comments about Enchanted made me interested in seeing it. It really was a sweet, charming movie, and not just for kids. As for the sequel, based on the comments here I don’t think I’ll bother with it.

The failure of the sequel kind of reminds me of the two Arthur films (with Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli) the 1981 original which was light-hearted and funny, and the sequel Arthur 2: On the Rocks which was dark and rather depressing.

I enjoyed it okay, but am unlikely to see it a second time. I thought the tone shift when they go into Monrolasia or whatever it was called didn’t get properly explored, and the stakes weren’t very well established. I found it fun, funny, and I liked a couple of the songs, though.

And the brief cameo from the actress who played the original Morgan, Rachel Covey, was a nice inclusion.

In a sense it was like WandaVision. Start out thinking it’s going to be a light, frothy piece of escapism, only to have it turn dark, with the principal character acting more and more unlike herself. Disenchanted took that way too far, doubling down on the formula by starting with an original premise that was original, upbeat and happy, and using a star who had acted with Muppets, fer cryin’ out loud!

Yeah, yeah, happy ending and all that. But by the time the movie got there, it was too late.

And once again I disagree with Dopers :). I found it to be a very cute, light tale, with a wonderful message. Great songs, great acting, fantastic choreography. It was a nice bit of fluff following up on the original nice bit of fluff.
