Well we went to see it with our 7yo today and it was delightful. Maybe not quite up to the best Pixar films, but it hit all the right marks, and avoided any missteps (unlike The Princess and the Frog, with that crappy hillbilly interlude).
We saw it in 2D, and I think we’ll go back next weekend to see 3D. Just the damn break and the lanterns should make it well worth it.
I loved Flynn’s cheesiness (“here comes the smolder!”), and the princess’s bipolar exhilaration/guilt montage was really funny, but also great character building. Also, I loved Maximus and everything he did, including just his shadow against the vines as he searched for Flynn - that actually got a decent wave of laughter from our audience. I also really like the thug who collects unicorns. And I really, really hated the bad guy. In a way it would have been more compelling to show that she had actually grown to love Rapunzel in a twisted way, but hell it’s a kids’ movie, and all the " . . . oh I’m just teasing you" stuff was good hate-able fun.
(So, now I’ll disclose how I’m an evil perv and am going straight to hell. In the pivotal scene, when he’s cut her hair and is dying, the very un-Disney thought occurred to me that she might have another, ah, resource to heal him, and it didn’t involve tears. I expect someone will write the appropriate slash fic eventually.)
This movie was in development hell FOREVER. I remember hearing about it when I still lived in COLLEGE (class of 2002!) Saw it tonight. This was the first Disney Animation film I’ve seen in years (that triple dose of suckage of Treasure planet, lilo&stitch and Brother Bear scared me off from them), and I was very very pleased. Similar humor style to Emperors New Groove, although not quite as snarky. The visuals were amazing (its a NONintrusive 3D) - I’ve heard that hair is the hardest thing to CGI…I Wonder if Disney took on the Rapunzel story simply to wow us with how well they conquered that? Maximus rules.
Now…would it count as incestious if Rapunzel and Gothel shared a place in my dreams tonight? Rule 34 is going to have a TON of fun with this one (good tip from the OP there). I couldn’t help but be distracted by her brunette eyebrows the whole film and wonder…although there is an in-story explanation for that. Also, that hair bondage is some of the best fetish fuel in Disney history. Yes, I’m going to hell too. Now I need to find that “sexiest animated character” thread from last week…
I thought the movie was terrific. I wished the ending wasn’t… the way it was, but it worked reasonably well and didn’t make me forget how wonderful everything prior was. It’s funnier than I expected!
I’m taking 10YO mudgirl to see this movie this afternoon. It’s reviewing well on RottenTomatoes, so I have hopes. Mostly, I’m hoping it won’t be as lame as MegaMind. :dubious:
Seriously, Saturdays are our ‘fun day’; she has bowling league in the morning, then we do whatever grocery shopping we need to do ‘in town’ (in town being a half-hour drive, and it’s where her bowling is), then we do fun stuff like go out to lunch, maybe see a movie, stuff like that.
Do you think it would be a good first movie for an almost-six year old? She hated* Princess and the Frog* so much she didn’t even finish the DVD but she loves Rapunzel, though all she knows is the Barbie version.
I think it would be good for her. The pacing is a lot faster than PatF - once they set up the deal with her hair and the tower, things move along very quickly, with lots of fun slapstick, songs, and action. It’s just tons of fun.
It does go in a completely different direction with the whys and wherefores of the girl having loooong hair and being trapped in a tower by the evil witch. So if she loves another version, you probably want to prepare her for the differences. But yeah - go see it!
What can I say? I thought Princess and the Frog was very well done–fun, vibrant and dynamic–and found Tangled a derivative snooze. The songs are all labored and unmemorable and every single stock Disney cliche is pulled out. Glimmers of occasional humor (like the chameleon) are there, but that’s par for the course; given the reviews, I expected something more. And once again, the 3D is cursory and has very little impact to these eyes.
Not a bad film, but a far cry from even the best of Disney’s modern era
We just got back from this movie and thought it was GREAT. I’d heard complaining about the songs, but how could anyone complain about a bunch of Visigoth ruffians doing showtunes? Loved the horse, of course, and the little chameleon and I thought the passive aggressive, self-confidence crushing witch made a great villain.
Worth seeing in 3-D, too, and I’m really ambivalent about 3-D.
The animation was gorgeous and the characters were great - story was a bit of a departure from Rapunzel, though, but for our times I’d imagine that’s a good thing.
Took laserkitty and our 4-yo to it yesterday. Beano was out of her seat, leaning against the back of the seat in front of her, entranced by the song-y and action parts. Safe to say that she loved it.
Before I saw the movie, I read an article that said they were moving away from showtunes in this movie, going for a more folky style. Sure sounded like showtunes to me. Not that this is a bad thing, but not what I was expecting.
Yeah, it’s such a shame that Toy Story 3 is gonna be getting all the awards attention this year. TS3 was great, but Tangled was better.
Tangled went through about 100 different versions. I’m sure one of them was folky style…
Disney Animation’s next film is going to be the remainder of the Winnie the Pooh stories. Thank god they’re animating it as a followup companion to the original movie, and not trying to do it in a style like the Yogi Bear movie.
The article was definitely talking about the released version. I found it here. I guess they were only talking about the first song (which still sounds more showtunes-y than folky to me).
