Did you generally eat fresh, frozen, or canned peas? I like frozen peas, but I can’t stand mushy canned peas.
My mom says I will get trichinosis from eating raw cookie dough, or even cookie dough ice cream. Yeah, Ma… I don’t even think salmonella or any other nasties actually associated with raw eggs (unlike trichinosis) are likely with commercial cookie dough ice cream, since I’d be shocked if they didn’t use some kind of pasteurized eggs to make the cookie dough.
I indulge in the stuff every so often, but I’m forced to wrap the cheese in a ziplock bag, then seal it further in a plastic container lest anyone else in the house take me out back and beat me to death for bringing something so pungent into the house.
Just the sight of me pulling the container out of the fridge will send people scurrying.
I like very stinky cheeses. In fact, if they don’t make the refrigerator smell like something is spoiled, it’s too bland to appeal to me.
I particularly love a nice ripe Camembert. I remember I found a good fragrant one at the market and stashed it at the refrigerator at work before I could take it home that night. Everyone at work kept announcing that it was time to clean the fridge, because “something died in there.” I didn’t let on that it was my cheese that was the culprit and quietly removed it when I left that night. Next day, someone was assigned to search the fridge for whatever it was that spoiled.
Is Miracle Whip supposed to be disgusting? I don’t eat it straight out of the jar with a spoon like pudding, but it’s just the thing for some sandwiches. Am I a bigger barbarian than I thought?
Lived in Japan a couple of years. Octopus is a delicacy; served a lot to us gaigin guests. Raw, boiled, fried, batter dipped, sliced, diced, baked, broiled, dried - I had it all. Nothing like going through the supermarket; miniature beef section but an aisle of suckers looking out at you from the shrink wrap.
Also mini-squid on pizza. Any and all pizza. Actually noticed when they weren’t scattered all over it.
Sushi is the vinegared rice, sashimi is the raw fish. but in common US usage …
I LOVE apricots. But my husband, who will eat anything that isn’t moving, detests them. Why, I have no idea. They’re sweet and GOOD! But according to him, apricots is my Disgusting Thing.
I also love spinich and asparagus, but properly prepared. Can’t eat 'em canned. Bleh. Lightly cooked is the way to go with these two.
I will say I have been near chitlins, but I haven’t actually eaten them. Like boxed mac ‘n’ cheese, I think you have to have been raised on them to enjoy them. Otherwise …entrails? No thanks.
I also love uncooked oats, but that’s probably just weird, not disgusting.
A lot of Americans don’t seem to know that you can get sushi that doesn’t include raw fish (I think this borders on willful ignorance in some cases).
Miracle Whip tastes like mayonnaise that is about 6 months past its expiration date. I know, because I ate some old mayonnaise once when I was 15, and it tasted like Miracle Whip.
EW! I think I’m going to throw up just at the thought of that… Get over here and hold my hair, now.
I’m kind of embarassed about this one, but a friend of mine once brought a pretty pricey piece of either brie or camembert to a little get together. They put it out,and good GOD, The Stench! I knowing fairly little about cheese took one whiff and promptly declared it “turned and no good!”. Disgusted, I whipped it in the trash.
Nobody said anything, but for all I know, I threw away an expensive delicacy.
There’s pretty much nothing I won’t eat. But of my more common, supposedly “disgusting” likes would include tripe, liver, stinky vegetables (kimchee, sauerkraut, etc), pickled herring, oily canned fishes of all types (mackerel, sardines, herring), blood sausage, uni, stinky cheeses, hunks of pork fat, lard-and-onions on thick bread, etc.
I also love okra, collard greens, asparagus, mustard greens, etc., but I don’t think of any of those as disgusting. I used to not like brussel sprouts, but now I love 'em, especially when roasted.
I can’t stand canned veggies–I’d rather not eat any. I make my cookie dough and then eat it raw. I’ve been doing this for 30 years. Haven’t gotten salmonella yet (I know, I know-always a first time). I wasn’t aware you could get trich from cookie dough–I thought that was raw pork.
I also like squid or octopus.
