I’m just happy that Little Mermaid lost, after little girls (and dopers who have fond memories of being little girls in the late 80s) and people who had never even heard of The Emperor’s New Groove knocked it out with this …
nah, Beauty & The Beast deserves to win. It’s one of Disney’s best movies, which seems to handle just about every aspect perfectly. I can’t wait til Disney Blu-Ray gets here! And I’m happy that The Lion King, whose popularity I was never able to understand, didn’t even make it to the final four.
Honestly, I’d have handicapped BatB as my odds-on favorite to win. So I’m not surprised.
What did surprise me was the relatively lack-luster performance of the classic Disneys that made Walt’s reputation. Similarly, that Groove made it to the semi-finals. Don’t get me wrong, I really am hugely impressed by that movie, but I hadn’t thought that the appeal to it was so broad based. (Or should I call it “board based”? ;))
I admit, I was surprised that Groove did so well, myself. As a mid-range seed it exceeded all practical expectations.
Although that whole sub-bracket did strangely. By the time we got to round four it was the 17 and 25 seed still standing. Both Cinderella and Lilo and Stitch got knocked off there in round three and that left the field open for an upset.
