4. Sleeping Beauty
5. The Little Mermaid

2. Beauty and the Beast
26. Fantasia

  1. Aladdin

11. The Lion King

  1. The Emperor’s New Groove

  2. Sleeping Beauty

  3. Beauty and the Beast

  4. The Lion King

  1. The Emperor’s New Groove

  2. The Little Mermaid

  3. Beauty and the Beast

  4. Aladdin

  1. 101 Dalmatians

  2. The Little Mermaid

  3. Beauty and the Beast

  4. The Lion King
Aladdin is really ‘dated’ with Robin Williams humor. He just references loads of stuff that isn’t ‘timeless’.

Sleeping Beauty is better animation but The Little Mermaid is a better movie.
I’ve always felt that Fantasia was slightly overrated.
I think Jonathan Chance really likes The Emperor’s New Groove and gave it a cake walk to the top. This film really isn’t like the others in this group. (is it? I’ve only seen parts and was not impressed. cheep animation and David Spade do not get me to watch a movie)

He’s not counting votes? I am biased, though: It’s one of my favorites.

  1. 101 Dalmatians

  2. The Little Mermaid

  3. Fantasia

  4. The Lion King

17th seed, my friend. Just slightly above the middle of the pack. The rest was determined by the bracket program I found online. Let’s keep the dodgy comments to a minimum.

For goodness sake, it had to go up against a harder than expected first round in the #16 seed when in a normal bracket (one with a number of teams that is a power of 2) it would have gone up against Hunchback of Notre Dame. Instead it drew Alice in Wonderland. Then it had to face #1 seed Cinderella!

  1. The Emperor’s New Groove

  2. 101 Dalmatians – I remember reading a giant-size picture book version of this story to my youngest sibling over and over again

  3. Sleeping Beauty

  4. The Little Mermaid -- a rare instance of picking the newer film over the older

  5. Beauty and the Beast

  6. Fantasia – why won’t the Belle toll for Beauty?

  7. Aladdin -- I wouldn't mind if this went the other way, though

  8. The Lion King

  1. 101 Dalmatians

  2. The Little Mermaid

  3. Beauty and the Beast

  4. Aladdin

101 Dalmatians is a sentimental pick it has no chance this round but I wanted to give a little support. Aladdin should win it all from here although Beauty and the Beast should give it a run for its money.

Now I really appreciate you running this, but ENG did get a second round bye. (and Cinderella as the number one seed? Not Beauty and the Beast? The one that nominated for the Best Picture Oscar before there was a special catagory for animated films?)

  1. The Emperor’s New Groove
    Easy one.

  2. The Little Mermaid

Another easy one.

Ooh, now they get harder:

  1. Beauty and the Beast

I love Fantasia, but Beauty and the Beast blew me away with the skill of its animation (that ballroom scene!) when I first saw it.

  1. The Lion King
The toughest one of all for me…I love both of these movies. But Lion King has to get the nod because I like the story a little better and I adore Scar

17. The Emperor’s New Groove
25. 101 Dalmatians

Never liked Dalmatians.

  1. Sleeping Beauty
    5. The Little Mermaid

This one was easy.
2. Beauty and the Beast
26. Fantasia

This one was very hard. Fantasia has some absolutely brilliant moments, and some duds (Rite of Spring, IMHO). BatB is all good.

3. Aladdin
11. The Lion King

17. The Emperor’s New Groove
[del]25. One Hundred and One Dalmatians[/del]
Story – Dalmatians
The story in Groove isn’t bad, but it is secondary to other elements. Dalmatians is quite original and a pretty good adaptation of the wonderful book.
Storytelling – Groove
This is where I give points to the irreverent nature of Groove. Every time they cut from the story it works and is always funny. Dalmatians is plain straight ahead.
Characters – Groove
All the characters, from the old man to the kids to the main players, are wonderful and fun. Ysma beats out Cruela easily.
Visual Style – Dalmatians
The style for Groove was great, but the debut of the Xerox animation process works perfectly for Dalmatians.
Animation – Groove
The animation in Groove is underrated, big time. It gets lost in the humor and style, but it is great animation.
Music – Groove
Not a whole lot of music in either, but Kuzco’s theme song beats out Cruela de Vil by a hair.

4. Sleeping Beauty
[del]5. The Little Mermaid[/del]
Story – Mermaid
Sleeping Beauty’s story suffered in bringing it to the screen, while I like the changes made to Mermaid.
Storytelling – Mermaid
The voice-over starting Sleeping Beauty is clunky. In Little Mermaid, the story is advanced in the songs, not halted by them.
Characters – Beauty
I was going to score this a tie, but Maleficent is my favorite villain.
Visual Style – Beauty
Sleeping Beauty is simply the most beautiful film ever. Mermaid is plain by comparison.
Animation – Beauty
I’m not knocking Mermaid’s animation (I routinely defend it), but the animation in Sleeping Beauty is better overall.
Music – Mermaid
How do you beat Tchaikovsky? Menken and Ashman is how. Every song is great. Every song moves the story, enhances the characters, or reinforces the themes. Some do all of those. “Part of Your World” is probably one of the best songs ever written. (And, for the record, “I Wonder” is better than “I Know You.”)
TIE! – Overtime Winner: Sleeping Beauty!

2. Beauty and the Beast
[del]26. Fantasia[/del]
Story – Beauty
This is hard to score because of the nature of Fantasia. Even when you factor in overarching themes Beauty wins out. Tale as old as time, indeed.
Storytelling – Beauty
The prologue voice-over by David Ogden Stiers works is this. The pacing is perfect, and again the music moves the story. Fantasia gets points for telling stories without words, but doesn’t win out.
Characters – Beauty
All the characters are great in Beauty, while the characters in Fantasia play third fiddle behind the music and the visuals themselves.
Visual Style – Fantasia
There isn’t anything particularly special about the style chosen for Beauty, but then again, not much can beat Fantasia in this department.
Animation – Fantasia
Fantasia is all about the animation, and not even Glenn Keane’s work on Beast can beat it out. It doesn’t help that Belle’s animation was uninspired.
Music – Beauty
I know, I know, some of the best music ever is included in Fantasia, but that’s the thing: it’s not original. It’s animation to existing music that can stand on its own. Three different songs from Beauty were nominated for the best song Oscar, and the ones that weren’t could have been. The score is amazing, too.

3. Aladdin
[del]11. The Lion King[/del]
Story – Aladdin
Duh.
Storytelling – Aladdin
Duh.
Characters – Aladdin
Duh.
Visual Style – Aladdin
Duh.
Animation – Aladdin
Duh.
Music – Aladdin
Duh.
See? See there? Objective proof that Aladdin is better than The Lion King.

  1. 101 Dalmatians

Love the New Groove, but 101 is a classic for a reason.

  1. Sleeping Beauty

My current pick for overall winner

  1. Beauty and the Beast

I love Fantasia, but Beauty and the Beast is fantastic AND more fun.

  1. Aladdin

I have an irrational hatered for the Lion King.

It’s not like I chose who got a bye, after all. As mentioned, a focus group of myself, a 41 year old woman, and an eight and three year old girl helped to determine the seedings. Then I poked around at some online listed to tighten it up. After that I went ot the bracket program and let that handle it.

  1. 101 Dalmatians

  2. Sleeping Beauty

  3. Beauty and the Beast

  4. The Lion King

  1. The Emperor’s New Groove

  2. The Little Mermaid

  3. Beauty and the Beast

  4. The Lion King
I don’t get the low seeding for this movie. It was huge even by Disney standards. And inspired a fantastic play.

  1. The Emperor’s New Groove

  2. Sleeping Beauty
(Can I vote that neither of them make it to the next seed?)

  3. Fantasia

  4. Aladdin
(Tough call, but I’m a sucker for Arabian Nights stories, even sort-of PC’d ones.)

101 Dalmations
The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin

I haven’t followed this from the start, but I’m surprised that there are so many of the 90’s Disney movies in the final eight. I know that they were kind of on a roll back then, but still. I assumed that movies like Dumbo, the Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland and Robin Hood would be serious contenders for the final spot.
