So I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Disney sequel. No Cinderella 2 or Aladdin: Return of Jafar or any of them. Are any of them any good? I’m going through lots and lots of movies with my daughter now, and it’s so fun to watch her enjoy the classics as well as the new stuff. I’m just wondering if it’s worth my time to get Little Mermaid 2 or whatever. Anyone have opinions?
I like Aladdin and the King of Thieves, and Bambi II (which was originally going to be called Bambi: Prince of the Forest, which is a much better title and I am annoyed they changed it) , and Lilo and Stitch: Stitch has a Glitch, and Lion King 1½ and thought they were really a lot better than you might expect, though not near as good as the originals.
I’ve seen a few others that I didn’t like, and there are many more I have never seen. But they’re aimed squarely at kids, rather than families, so they should appeal to the under-8s if not the adults.
Please do yourself a favor and avoid Return of Jafar. It’s a real stinker. I haven’t seen most of the Disney sequels, by choice. There have to be better movies to waste time on.
If you’ll count Toy Story as a Disney Classic (it’s not much newer than Aladdin, after all, but it is Pixar) then it has a fine sequel.
The Rescuers Down Under is arguably a better Disney film than The Rescuers. I say better Disney film, not better film, because The Rescuers’ biggest problem is that it’s not quite “on” tonally as a Disney kid’s movie- it’s scary, harsher, and more realistically brutal than The Rescuers Down Under. I like both, and the book they’re based on (which is almost completely different; the only real similarities are the existence of Miss Bianca, Bernand, and the Rescue Aid Society.)
I can’t remember Aladdin and the King of Thieves (the threequel of the Aladdin set) at all- only watched it once, I think- but I was recently reminded Jerry Orbach sings a good villain song in it, so it’s worth watching for that if you like Orbach.
I sort-of watched a straight-to-video Disney sequel a few months back. I was waiting for my car at the shop and they had Cinderella 3 playing in the waiting room. I was there long enough to sit through the whole movie and it really wasn’t too bad. I had brought the newspaper & a book (I had known I would be waiting for a while), so I didn’t pay super-close attention to the whole thing, but eough to follow the story and my kids would probably have quite enjoyed it when they were little.
My kids have seen Cinderella 2 and 3 at friends’ houses. As far as I could see 2 was pretty awful, and 3 was not terrible.
I’ve seen about 75% of the Disney sequels. They just make me sad and angry that Disney is willing to put out crappy sequels (and prequels and movie-based cartoons) just to earn more money. The only one I actually enjoyed was Toy Story 2.
List of DTV Disney sequels and/or DTV originals. Thankfully, Lasseter’s putting an end to them.
I guess neither of them are Disney movies, but the Balto sequel and Fieval Goes West were pretty good.
Indeed. Toy Story 2 was originally meant to be released direct to DVD, but it turned out so well, it went to the theaters instead – how rare is that?
Didn’t Eisner have the TV animation department making the straight-to-video sequels?
He did have outside animation studios do them, at least. Theere may have been crossover with the TV branch. There was a studio in Sydney that did a few of the DVD films.
Most of the DTV movies were done by DisneyToon Studios in Australia, although a few were done by the TV animation department.
