You have to love all the original ideas in Hollywood!
You certainly could have a lot of original ideas within the umbrellas of Star Wars or MCU. Both those milieus are broad enough to support a number of action flicks, more dramatic/story driven flicks, comedy, etc. Plus they’re broad enough to have nearly unlimited environments to do it in. Whether or not they’ll take advantage of it, who knows (though I’d argue MCU has done pretty well)
Avatar still boggles my mind. Yes, I know it made a gazillion dollars before but it left virtually no cultural footprint. It’s the paragon of empty cinematic calories but I guess I wouldn’t leave all that potential money sitting on the table either.
A quick google search reveals plenty of smaller movies, at least in my area.
Not to mention that you can get plenty of original stuff on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, etc.
People have nice TV’s now and they don’t like going to the movieplex unless there’s something really spectacular on screen.
I thought James Cameron said at this point, they were only allowing him to make 2 Avatar sequels and waiting to see how the first one goes before they pay for the final 2.
Are they going to let him make the entire set of 4 now? I believe he filmed/captured the first two sequels actors in 2018.
But at least it was an original movie. It wasn’t a sequel or a remake.
It’s a vicious cycle:
- Original movie gets released
- Fans want a sequel
- Sequel gets released
- People complain that only sequels get made and no original movies.
Also, it’s weird to look to Disney for original movies. They built their empire off adaptations.
Avatar was a cliche-ridden retelling of the Noble Savage trope.

Maybe if the guy in black blows up the Avatar planet, I might pay to see that.

If we’re lucky, the Indiana Jones films will be the flip-slip of the Star Trek movies, where the odd-numbered ones are good and only the even-numbered ones suck.
I do have to confess, I am interested in the July 17, 2020 big screen “Bob’s Burgers” adaptation.
Avatar has the same scope for wider storytelling as either series - we’ve only really seen one culture of a multicultural species, and the next one is supposedly going to have an underwater thing going on. Plus there’s room for more locations on the other moons of the parent gas giant, without even leaving the system.
You could get into why the Na’vi are different from all the hexapod dual-nervecord animal life. Or jump to the future and see what impact the first film’s events had on their culture.
Not saying that’s how things are going to go, but the scope is there…

Sure, could be. My “boggles” comment wasn’t really about the potential scope but rather the commitment to a film that history proved was very forgettable (albeit also very profitable so I get it, I just don’t get it, ya get me?)
My point about SW/MCU was that I don’t see a film set in those universes as automatically a “sequel” although they obviously could be and you can have a lot of creative or original ideas while keeping it in those worlds. I think MCU has illustrated this better than SW since all the SW films are sequels or prequels to the one core story but I understand Disney has been trying to make stand alone stories rather than only “Star Wars Part 12…”
BTW I guess endgame really means “here comes 8 more movies”
Well, it’s the ending of the “classic” chapter of the MCU. Now they start building films around the people who weren’t in the original cinematic Avengers clubhouse. No one thought it actually meant “No more MCU”.
