I was chewing a piece of Bubble Yum once, and suddenly it just spontaneously dissolved into nothing. I’ve heard that this has happened to others as well. Any explanations? It was really strange–one minute I had a wad of gum in my mouth, and the next I had nothing.

The poster above the poster below is very smart.
I went down the list of what some of the Teeming Millions suggested was the cause of disintegrating gum syndrome, and here’s the results:
Was I sexually aroused? No.
Making out? No.
Do I have unusual tooth fillings? No.
Was I eating chocolate? No.
Was the gum under heat or sunlight? No.
Was I nervous? Possibly.
Was I angry? No.
Was I at a concert? No.
Was I experiencing adrenaline surges? No.
Eating butter? No.
Lipstick? Please.
Excessive chewing? Yes.
Was I exercising? No.
Did I have a hot mouth? I don’t think so.
Was I eating something greasy? No.
So my conclusion, based on Cecil’s column, is that it was possibly excessive chewing and/or nervousness. YMMV. Thanks for the link, guys.
