There has been much debate about the possibility of travelto other planets…and even a trip to Mars takes a long time! Is it possible to put humans into a state of hibernation? As I recall, bears and other animals that hibernate during the winter experience the following:
-heart rate drops to a fraction of the normal rate
-body temp. drops
-metabolic functions slow down
-breathing slows down
Under the conditions of hibernation, a bear manages to sleep away the winter, and has no need to hunt for food. Could humans be put in such a state, and sent off on long interplanetary voyages?
Also, could hibernation be used to slow down the ageing process…could you hibernate for decades?
Seems like sleeping for8 months would be better than going crazy in a little capsule,on your tripto Mars!
every science fiction writer in the universe has thought of this idea already…
answer: no it doesn’t work with humans that way. maybe we can send bears to mars…
It doesn’t currently work that way with current humans. Hard to know what bioscience could deliver in even 50 years. I don’t believe there is any definitive answer at this time.
Note that hibernating organisms are still aging, just at a slower rate. (Leaving aside exactly what aging means.)
It didn’t work for Rip van Winkle.
To be hibernating the same way bears et al do, you’d still have to be burning some energy. They fatten up during the fall, and live off that during the winter. I imagine if you could re-wire the human body to go through the same metabolic processes, you’d still only be able to pull of a few months due to needing to burn at least some energy to stay alive.
Maybe all the astronauts would have to go on a sugar and lard diet to pack on 75lbs of fat before strapping in for blast-off. Survivng for decades without taking in food seems to be beyond possibility for a warm-blooded animal, even if it already has a hibernation button. Maybe you could hook up an IV to a huge external vat of butter or purified glycogen or something, but that’s just getting silly.
