I am NOT talking about freezing corpses (al la Ted Williams). What I would like to learn about is the current status in research intended to allow humans to sleep for years a low body temperature. much like bears and other animals hibernate. I recall reading that at the (hibernating bear’s) metabolic level, 12 months in cold sleep would be a like 2 weeks of ordinary time…so theoretically, one could use cold sleep to travel into the future, or travel to a distant solar sytem. Have any breakthroughs been made in this field? Many years ago, I heard that Danish scientists succeeded in freezing fish, and reanimating them as much a 2 weeks later. And, in the classic Sci-Fi novel (Heinlen’s “THE DOOR INTO SUMMER”), the hero endures 36 yeaqrs of cold sleep.
Can it be done? And, what would the psychic state be on someone revived, after sleeping for 25, 50 or 100 years?
I seem to remember reading a Reader’s Digest article about some brain surgery in which they put the patient in suspended animation for like, half an hour or so.
Other than that, I really dunno.
There have been experiments where doge were cryogenically cooled for a while and then revived. If it works on dogs, it should work on humans.
I don’t think it was long-term however - more like for a few hours. Real cold sleep (for years or decades) might be more difficult.
