I just know the one song of hers about how she spent all day and night getting nailed by her boyfriend that now she can’t walk straight.
It is beyond stupid, but let me try to explain why you’re wrong with an analogy. If a woman doesn’t like having a door opened for her, a man who does so is not being obnoxious. The woman is just annoyed by that custom.
Was that necessary?
I think it is very nice when a man opens a door for me, and I always thank him. However,
if the door he opens is not one I want to walk through, I’m not going to go in just because he opened the door.
You like her, I don’t. You think she has talent, I don’t care if she does or doesn’t. Her voice irritated my ears, I hate high notes.
What I don’t know is why you care what I think of her. I don’t care that you like her, I’m not trying to tell you you are wrong for liking her. I don’t care who likes her.
In all honesty though, and tell the truth, if she weighed 400 pounds, had a pocked marked face, and straggly hair would you still be so enamored of her* talent*?
Not apologise, but my point is she’s not a complete nobody that no reasonable person could have been expected to have heard of - or a made-up name.
I’m not sure if it’s how you intended it, but it certainly seemed to tie into the theme of “I’ve never heard of these people and also get off my lawn” running through this thread.
“Into You” was stuck in my head for quite a while. And, if this is relevant, I’m 46.
No. Sorry. I have kids, well they’re pretty much adults at this point, so I do in fact know a lot of music like the Biebs, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, etc.
I can’t help not knowing who I don’t know though! That’s not a badge of honour; it’s just the truth!
Absolutely yes.
To me this is the same as someone claiming that an obese opera star has a horrible voice. I do not like opera. I do not listen to opera. To my taste it’s worse even than most pop. I’ve tried to like it but I just don’t. And I can still recognize the raw talent and skill that is the singing voice.
My saying that I do not like listening to it and have no interest in it, even that it annoys me, is fair game. Should I though say that this voice say is bad (“shrill” even when she gets to the upper ranges) just because I don’t like the genre?
Fact is I often prefer to listen to the singing of people with less raw vocal talent and skill as long as they stay within their range and the talent they have serves the material well. And the material is good. I enjoyed listening to Joni Mitchell (heck still enjoy) for example and that material was much much better than anything I’ve heard from Grande or the rest of the modern pop scene with her voice serving it perfectly, but objectively her voice was not an awe-inspiring thing, and her range was relatively middling.
See, you really aren’t even paying attention. I already said her music isn’t my cup of tea. I recognize that she’s talented. Maybe if she wasn’t such a hotty you’d be able to admit that.
Never heard of Ariana before the bombing.
I just checked YouTube. Not my taste at all.
She seems to appeal to very young teens, 12-14. Very similar to Shaun Cassidy in the late 70’s. Every 12 year old girl went crazy over his pop songs.
Well, it’s pretty much what the song “Side to Side” is about and she’s also confirmed it.
Have you seen Britney Howard of the Alabama Shakes? Not attractive, but she owns the stage and the crowd and people love her for it.
Ariana Grands can sing. She’s one of the more talented of this crop of pop stars. I don’t choose to listen to her stuff, but her talent is plain to hear.
It’s cool you don’t like her, but I wouldn’t spend time disparaging her voice. It’s just not for you.
There’s literally no variety. I was in the car and the I must hear the same Katy Perry or Chainsmokers song 5 times over the course of a 2 hour drive (presumably there were also some Ariana Grande songs in there as well). And it doesn’t do any good to change the channel because they are all the same and are all owned by I Heart Radio. According to the announcer, there is an app that lets you listen to any of their stations. But so what? Is their Chicago station any different from New York? In the old days there was a “rock” station, a “classic rock” station, a “dance” station, a “top 40” station and so on…
FWIW, I know who AG is and probably heard her music, but I can’t name any songs off the top of my head.
Thing is though, being a great singer is not necessarily required to be a great star and by itself it is not necessarily* enough *to make you worth listening to.
A true great is greater than the some of its parts. They may be a technically great singer as well but it is really a minor part of the package and if all they have is that great technical ability then…meh, I’m sure people out there will enjoy it and I’d never claim they were not a good singer but if that’s the only part of the package that they have then I’ll probably pass.
That’s my view in general but I don’t know if any of it applies to Ms. Grande because, as I said before, I’ve never heard any of her work.
pfft! SUM of its parts of course…what a maroon.
Yep, I hear you. As a musician with some insight to the business I am saying that Grande has great chops, a marketable look, hooky songs, and an incredible management team behind her. A person can choose not to like her but she is doing everything well and experiencing a lot of success because of it.
And there are great stars, even ones with great voices, who I don’t think are worth my listening to. And nobodies who I think are.
Grande is a star. A great star (within the pop star diva universe)? Maybe she’ll get there; she’s so very young yet, seeming to me much younger than even her only 23 years. I’m no expert on diva pop stars. Her voice is not though what potentially keeps her out of the company of say, Beyonce, Madonna, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Cher … Getting there I think takes something more than a great voice, a marketable look, catchy hooks, and a good management team, and I have no idea what that extra thing is.
And FWIW while I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to many of those great divas my dissing their voices, or saying that all any of them had was being a “hottie”, would be just ignorant on my part.
Well, there isn’t much special about Cher’s voice though it’s got “character” I suppose. Especially nowadays. I saw an interview where she admitted all that auto tune weirdness in “Life after love” was because she just can’t hit those notes anymore. Madonna is also a self admitted not awesome singer.
I’ve known about her for years. When the show Victorious was on (looking it up started in 2010) my daughters were the exact demographic. I watched the show with them. Grande was a kid herself but she was good at playing an airhead and she was often the punchline. There were music performances on the show but I don’t remember if any came from her since she wasn’t the star. I was also aware that she became a popstar on her own afterwards. In my humble opinion I think she has a lot of talent but her music isn’t the style I like. I voted for no since I don’t know any of her songs.
