What about Steve Barnes? He writes military SF, he’s straight, and he knows karate. So you can like SF, be straight, and be black. But street cred? Now you’re asking too much.
The bottom line is “once you go geek, you never go back”. Anyone who reads, writes, watchs, or even acknowledges the existence of science fiction will never have street cred. Think about it - would a real Klingon do something like pretending to be a Klingon?
I am a non melanin-challenged person and I need to chime in as a fried ice cream lover. I eat less sushi during my meal so that I can have fried green tea ice cream for dessert. I’ve also enjoyed fried ice cream at various Mexican restaurants.
I don’t know the other AA folks here, but they must not be aware that I was recently elected the new (and charming) spokesmodel for people of color. Please stop speaking for our people. I am the one.
It depends. If you get it from other black people, it may count for a few points. Unless they all laugh about it afterwards. Plus, you get points for living in Oakland.
But if you’re getting “wassup OG” from white people, then no points. In fact, everyone involved should deduct ten points from their total.
I wonder how much of that comes from the emphasis some black Americans place on black culture? For instance, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of one Latino accusing another of not being Latino enough. Every ethnicity has its own traits and tendencies, of course, but it seems that there is a lot more (or more vocal) cultural pride around black American culture than there is around many others. That in and of itself would tend to make people curious, I would think.
That statement right there ought to close the thread. We’ve heard from blacks, whites, and now the infamous “other” category that all enjoy fried ice cream.
I have read through this, and I still do not have an answer to something.
I am a white teacher in a school that is about 95% African American. I Recently had this conversation with one of my students:
“Ms. F.” she said, “don’t take any offense, but I have a question.”
I said, “Ok.”
She said,“You know I work at McDonalds right?”
I said," Yes"
She said, “How come white mothers order milk and a hamburger for their kids?”
All the other students around said "Eww. " and acted all grossed out.
Having done that very thing before, I still don’t understand the question.
I just had to jump in here. I know that this at least used to happen quite a bit. My dad speaks spanish with a bit of an american accent, and when he was younger, he would get shit from the recent immigrants. However, this was in the Imperial Valley in California and quite a few years ago, so YMMV.
I certainly don’t get people telling me that, but that’s because I’m REALLY white and don’t look the least bit like my dad’s side of the family.
Just a WAG, but lactose intolerance. Quite a lot of non-white folks are lactose intolerant.
